Enoch rolled over in his thin bed. He couldn't fall asleep no matter how hard he tried, so he just reverted back to what he normally did; he ran over the plan in his head.
"Okay," he thought, "Then Vida will grab the guard's arm..." Faint footsteps approached.
Enoch laid perfectly still. Then he heard more: silent but still audible. He knew what was happening. He slowly gripped the sides of his bed; a bead of sweat rolled down his forehead. Then his bunk shook.
He heard muffled yelling. Tears swelled in his eyes. He heard a scream.
"Help me!"
He was right, except it wasn't him they were coming for; it was Bhikhu. Nobody in the room moved except the guards and Bhikhu struggling for his life.
Tears soaked Enoch's pillow as he cried until the morning call.
Enoch got out of bed, wiped the sweat and tears of his face and tried to look as normal as possible. He walked out of the Gemini living quarters and plodded towards The Market. On the way he saw Vida. Vida ran to him.
"Good morning!" she kissed him on the cheek. "Hey..." she inquired, "What's wrong?" Another tear ran down Enoch's cheek. She wiped it off with her hand and then held his for the walk down to The Market.
Later that day an announcement came over the loudspeaker. Az spoke.
"If you have noticed the absence of someone you know, worry not! They are quite all right. They have been chosen to be sent up early becasue of their outstanding work. Let's give them a round of applause."
Never before nor after has there been such a mournful clapping. Enoch gripped Vida's hand harder than he thought.
"It's almost time," he breathed.
