I looked behind me and saw my mum holding my brother's hand and carrying the duffel bag. She smiled once she met my gaze and I returned it. We moved along with the crowd and boarded the airplane.
After a while I noticed Liam shifting in his seat. "Liam you ok?", I ask concern dripping from my words. "Of course I am Kim", he says enthusiastically, I grin looking down at him. He's been this way ever since we took the decision.
I turn my head to look out the window, thinking of all the memories and times we spent in Miami, my childhood home. The place where I grew up, where me and Liam used to go swimming in the beach, our house was not very big but it was our home sweet home. Mum and me always cooked together for dinner.
After everything that has happened to us, it was difficult for us to move on and the apartment no longer felt like our home. Not to forget the sleepless nights or crying ourselves to sleep only to wake up again screaming. It was difficult to cope would be an understatement. Every time I closed my eyes I could see his face, I wonder how it is for mum. "It will be fine, we'll be fine. It's going to be ok" I used to say more to myself than to her as if I was convincing myself. She is a very strong woman. She is my rock. But everyone has a breaking point.
Looking back at those times, sends shivers down my neck. I was devastated when I got the news. I couldn't believe what I saw that moment. If only I could have stopped him that day, if only I had never let him go out of the house, my dad would have been with us today. A lone tear slipped out of my eye but I wiped it before anyone could notice. No, you can't do this, you have to be strong for mum and Liam. We need each other. My inner voice screamed in my head. Even though the mourning period was long gone but the grief of his demise never left us. It left a void in our hearts. We can do this together. I told myself.
