"Yeah, scrub, go lay in a ditch or something. Maybe you be lucky enough for a possum to come and eat you," Hillary Dawson says, shoving me down into the dirt. Her little posse snickers and kicks dirt in my face. They kick me until I'm pretty sure I've broken my ribcage.

After they leave, I crawl over to my bicycle hidden in the bushes. I pull it out and begin to pedal down the sidewalk.

Why me? Out of all the seventh graders she could've picked to be the one, why me? Why do I have to be dead meat?

Why do I have to be bullied?

"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me," I say to myself.

I hear wheels spinning on the pavement behind me. I've had enough for today.

"Hillary," I snap, "just get your butt out of here and leave me alone. Haven't you gotten your fair share of sheer joy from people's terror today?" No answer. I look back, expecting her.

But it's not. It's a whole army of white-and-black things with wheels on their hands and feet following me. They look like skeletons on gooey black backgrounds. I pedal even faster, trying to get away.

They catch me and hold me down. One holds a spinning saw up, bringing it to my neck.

"No!" I cry, trying to look away. It's no use, I'm frozen. I close my eyes.

"Not on my watch!" a voice calls out. A light bluish-turquoise robot monkey jumps out with saws on its hand and begins slashing the gooey monsters. He takes out a blackish-green ball.

"C'mon, Gibson!" he says, throwing it on the ground. It opens up into a huge black circle. "Yes!" he says. He shoves me through.

"Sorry!" he calls in after me.
