Bitter.

bitter

Like the taste of spite that parted from her lips.

bitter

Like the absinthe that trickled down his throat.

bitter

Like the coppery tang wafting from his tainted hands.

bitter

Like the dreary view of grey uniforms through battered bars.

...

The cement walls surrounding him felt like a pillow to the face and the addition of the leaky drain could make a sane man tear the skin from his body.

An endless disturbance much like the pests that ran amuck within his cell. He was barely hanging on by a thread and the appearance of a lone mouse feasting on the moulding scraps discarded in the corner wasn't doing much for his thinning sanity.

A mouse. He did a double take. A healthy creature like a gift presented before him. Plump and well-nourished, an ironic juxtaposition before his gaunt and haggard frame. What a perfect opportunity, he mused, a barely restrained grin tugging at his face. Retrieving the makeshift dart gun concealed behind a narrow gap in the wall, he aimed the contraption at the unsuspecting prey.

Thud

A sudden calm washed over him. The slowing palpitations and easing nausea brought an air of déjà vu, a flooding sensation which he welcomed readily.

The familiarity brought him back to the dim alleyway, where he had been cornered against the biting metal of an air conditioning unit. Its whirling propeller was digging agonisingly into his bare back.

She was too close for comfort. The sinister ebony of her irises seemed to blend seamlessly with the black of the night. Her poisonous words flew out incessantly like daggers through the stiff air, twisting with each unbecoming barb.

So chatty, he thought. His hands tightened around the grip of the well-worn ghost pistol.

So much bark and yet no bite. He could feel the rising warmth of the green spirit enveloping his mind, unveiling a foreign boldness.

Such a chatty inconsequential pest. Just like a mouse.

Thud

So very chatty one second, and not a single breath in the next.
