Chapter 3: Leads

After a long walk Wei Zhang and Lan Xichen followed the spirit's directions to a small field nearby the town, it was out of the way and hidden. Wei Zhang looks around before holding up the pot as the silver energy inside flows out and points to the middle of the field where a big patch was taken up by various flowers.

"Over there," Wei Zhang said as he walks over to the flowers and looked around, he knelt down and felt around.

"What are you looking for?" Lan Xichen asked moving over and knelt down to look as well.

"I'm looking for any signs of a struggle or maybe clues if we're lucky," Wei Zhang said as he moves flowers around.

Lan Xichen felt around, he couldn't feel any disturbances or footprints but considering the time frame of when this female spirit died to now it was most likely the marks in the ground were long gone. He moves only to jump when his hand touched Wei Zhang's hand, they had reached for the same spot by accident. Lan Xichen felt his heart beat faster as he felt the warmth from Wei Zhang's hand, he looks up meeting the martial arts disciple's eyes.

He felt his cheeks warm as Wei Zhang smiled and gently pulled his hand away.

"My apologies," Wei Zhang said trying to ignore his racing heart as Lan Xichen pulls his hand away and clears his throat.

"It's fine," Lan Xichen said watching as Wei Zhang felt around in the spot they had both reached for.

"Ha, found something," Wei Zhang said as he pulled something from under the flowers, it was a hairpin.

It was carved from wood with the end bit made into a set of three blooming plum blossoms, simple but made with care. Wei Zhang held it up to the incense pot as the silver energy reached out and wrapped around the pin almost lovingly.

"This is hers, now we can play inquiry to get more details," Wei Zhang said as he looks at Lan Xichen who nods.

"I can play the guqin, I brought one with me just in case," Lan Xichen said he had helped to teach his brother how to play it after all.

He pulled out his Qiankun bag and summoned a seven-string guqin, he sat in the lotus position and settled the instrument on his knees. Wei Zhang watched holding the pot and hairpin, Lan Xichen soothes the strings before he began playing. The Wei listened carefully memorizing the notes, he would practice it later it could be useful in the future.

The spirit inside the pot reacts and surges out ready to answer, Lan Xichen nods and stops playing to look at Wei Zhang for the first question.

"First let's ask their age, it will help us pin down who this is," Wei Zhang said thinking back to the list of missing people.

Lan Xichen nods and plays a few notes, a second later the strings play themselves.

"23, so it is the seamstress," Lan Xichen said as he placed his hands back on the strings.

"Does she know how she died?" Wei Zhang asked.

Lan Xichen played the strings asking the question, it was silent for a moment before the string play again.

"She said she felt a pain in her neck then nothing," Lan Xichen said relaying the answer.

"In the neck, what kind of pain? Piercing or twisting?" Wei Zhang asked as he held his chin in thought while Lan Xichen asked.
