Harry POV

Dumbledore stood in front of the Great Hall. First day back. We just assumed it was the regular start of term speech. How wrong we were.

"To our newcomers, welcome! To our old hands - welcome back! There is a time for speech making, but this is not it. Tuck in!"

"Now, our caretaker, Mr Filch, has asked me to remind you-"

"Heh hem"

Silence, then whispers began to blossom over and around the Great Hall.

"Thank you, Headmaster, for those kind words of welcome. And how lovely to see all your bright happy faces smiling up at me" Nobody was smiling. "I'm sure we're all going to be very good friends.

Fred and George snorted "That's likely" the murmured.

"The Ministry of Magic has always considered the education of young witches and wizards of vital importance. Although each Headmaster has brought something new to this historic school..." Umbridge nodded to Dumbledore. "Progress for the sake of progress must be discouraged. Let us preserve what must be preserved, perfect what can be perfected and prune practices that ought to be prohibited"

"Thank you Professor Umbridge, that really was most illuminating"

"Illuminating? What a load of waffle!" Ron said in an undertone to me and Hermione.

"What's it mean?"

Hermione opened her mouth to answer.

"I have a very special announcement to make!" The Great Hall became silent. "We will be having some guests from America here at Hogwarts" Cue 1,000 whispered conversations.

"Excuse me, Professor Dumbledore?" A Hufflepuff 1st year named Natalie Smith asked. "Why are they coming?"

"Ah, they are coming to protect our school from Voldemort"

Insert the 'Voldemort isn't back' protests from students. Stupid gits.

"Voldemort is back, and even if that were not the case we would still have these American guests"

That shut everybody up real quick. Bravo Professor! :>

"They will arrive tomorrow at 5:00 PM, hopefully "

"Am I the only one who heard the word 'Hopefully' slipped in there?" Hermione whispered.

"Why would he say hopefully?" I questioned as Ron nodded.

"I'll tell you what the real question is,"

Dean leaned toward us. "The Slytherins didn't object when Dumbledore said Voldemort was back"

"So you believe me?" I asked, shocked.

"You read what rotten stuff the Daily Prophet said about you, and as far as I'm concerned you've never lied to me" Dean said softly, as if he were trying to keep it out of ear range from Seamus, which was a bit odd. "So yes mate, I believe you"

"Thanks mate!" I replied, grinning like a cheshire cat.

"Now off to bed, pip pip"

This was going to be a VERY interesting year.
