"Mommy, mommy!" The familiar yet so mysterious little girl screamed to Meredith and started running towards her. Meredith still couldn't make out the little human's face. "Adelaide?" Meredith murmured the name. "We're gonna get you mommy!" the little girl was suddenly running beside Derek. The euphoria she felt at that moment could not be described.
She woke up from her dream to realize she was laying comfortably into Derek's arms. They were both on maternity and paternity leave respectively considering Meredith's due date was 2 weeks away now. She didn't move a muscle and fell back asleep. She woke again to Derek looking down at her with the stupidest yet most beautiful smile on his face. She smiled back.
"Good morning" he told her and kissed her head.
"Adelaide" she replied instead of a good morning. He looked at her confused. "Buggy. We should name her Adelaide" she explained.
"I love it. But what would be her nickname. It's a long word she wont even be able to pronounce it for the first 3 years" he chuckled.
"Adele" Meredith innocently said.
"Okay I can go with it. Now let's get up" he said.
"No, I want to stay in bed all day" she whined.
"I'm hungry I want breakfast" he said and pulled the sheets off her revealing her very naked body and her very big baby bump. He smiled. "Or I could just get breakfast in bed" he said and started caressing gently her thighs.
"No Der I'm not feeling very good right now" she said and pushed him away.
"Let me make you feel better" he smirked thinking she was being silly.
"No seriously babe-" she said but was cut off by a contraction and made a loud groan.
"What? Meredith what hurts?" he asked concerned.
"I just had a really painful contraction" she said grinding her teeth in pain.
"Do you think she's coming?" Derek asked excited.
"Ugh I don't know. But I really need to pee now this baby is crashing my uterus" she quickly got up. Right when she got up blood started dripping from her core. She saw it and lost the ground beneath her feet. "Der" she said and he looked at her hiding his fear to try and not freak her out more. She felt dizzy from the shock and leaned back on Derek who hugged her for a moment and then grabbed a pair of panties to put on her.
"These are gonna be ruined don't put them on me" she said in a half conscious state.
"No I'm taking you to the hospital, I'm not taking any risks. This could be placental abruption." He also put a shirt over her head and took a pad from the bathroom to put on her panties as well so she didn't feel ashamed. Lastly he put sweatpants on her and lifted her up going to the car. In his state of shock he didn't even wear a shirt. He got in the driver's seat and started the car. He took a moment to calm down and started driving to the hospital. Meredith was now completely unconscious and he didn't know if it was the blood loss or the shock. He hoped for the latter. He reached Seattle Grace where his colleagues were already waiting after he called them. Addison and Arizona rushed to the pale looking woman with a portal ultrasound machine. Arizona squirted the gel on Meredith and Addison started looking around. They looked at each other in worry but there wasn't fear in their eyes.
"Okay let's call up the OR we have a placental abruption so we need to perform and emergency C- section." Addison said.
"No she- she doesn't want surgery, she wants a natural birth" he said on the verge of tears. He knew at this point there was no such option but he wasn't thinking clearly. Meredith was half out of consciousness.
"Derek I'm sorry we don't have an option but you can be in there with her if you wish" Arizona said.
"Derek it's okay" Meredith whispered though the oxygen mask the EMTs had placed on her. He grabbed her hand and they went into the OR. It was indeed placental abruption that wasn't caught on time but the baby didn't suffer any oxygen or nutrient deficits. The blood loss was major and Meredith's STATs dropped. She was coding. Derek looked at Meredith and then at his beautiful newborn daughter who was already being transferred to the NICU.
"Go Derek. I got her" Addison told him and he went with the baby and Arizona. They reached the NICU.
"What name should we write on her chart?" Arizona smiled. They were both very emotional.
"Adelaide Meredith Grey Shepherd." He said and a tear escaped his blue puffy eyes.
"That's long" Arizona laughed emotionally. "It's beautiful"
"Yeah. We'll just call her Adele" he said and smiled.
"Well Adele you are a beautiful baby" she smiled. Adelaide was very small for a baby that was carried to term. She had blonde hair already. She hadn't opened her eyes yet but Derek was sure they were green like Meredith's. Addison came in and she looked relieved too.
"She's fine. She is going to be awake soon so let's all go and see her. And look at you pretty lady" she cooed to Adelaide. They went to Meredith's room and she was waking up.
"Hey beautiful. Our daughter is amazing" Derek rushed to her side.
"You saw her?" she cried happy tears.
"I saw her. And we gave her a name" he smiled.
"Oh no did you not name her Adelaide? Derek I told you it's fine to call her Adele-" she rambled
"Adelaide Meredith Grey Shepherd" he said and a single silent tear escaped her eyes. He hugged her and she hugged him. Soon the family of three would all be together.
