MAY23
ONEYEARANDFOURMONTHS LATER
"How is everyone doing?"
"Everyone's fine," Akaashi says on the other line. "Bokuto is doing fine, too."
"Ah. That's good to hear," I respond.
I step off of the escalator and make my way to the baggage claim area. My university's summer semester is already headway; I figured it would be nice to finally come back to Japan for the break instead of taking another round of summer courses. This is the first time that I've been back since the day I left.
On the plane here, I wondered just how much things have changed since I said goodbye. Of course, the occasional text from Akaashi and the multitude of them from Koutarou were enough to give me the bare bones. Yet, the idea of not having seen anyone in person for this long gave me a sense of nervousness about finally being back.
"Are he and Matsudaira still together?" I ask the inevitable question. Surprisingly, though Koutarou would send me messages quite frequently, we always skirted the topic of his girlfriend. Whether it was an unspoken rule or just something that had never come up, I don't know.
"... You should probably catch up with him."
Akaashi's response is cryptic enough to make way for a look of confusion on my face. Yet, I try not to think much of it as I scan the bags making their way through the loop in search of my own. Luckily, there is only one suitcase to look for.
"Right. Well, I can't wait to see you both. I'll meet you at the game?" I say, and he makes a sound of affirmation in response.
"See you, (Y/N)."
"See you."
When all is said and done at the airport, I exit through the automatic doors to greet a hectic environment. There is the bustling of people weaving their ways through each other and the sight of large buses aimed to board tourists. Scanning all around, I attempt to find the local bus that'll take me to my destination. Soon enough, I find its post.
