Emery's POV

Mommy just dropped me off to school. Inside the classroom, I see James. I rush to his side.

"Hi," I wave to him.

"Hi," he looks up from his toy car he's playing with.

"Why are you always here before me?" I wonder

"Because my parents bring me to school early."

"Mine aren't late."

I grab another toy car, bigger than James', and try to be a monster truck trying to make the other car break, because it's so strong.

Later, we have little animal crackers for snack time. I eat all of mine, except for four monkeys.

"This one is me, the one above is Mommy, the one next to her is Daddy and finally, Auden's next to me."

"Who's Auden?" James asks.

"He's my brother. Almost."

"Almost?"

"He's not born yet."

"So, not exactly."

"No, just almost."

James leads our conversations into babies. "How do you think babies are made? They don't appear in your stomach suddenly, right?"

"Sometimes I hear somethings in Mommy's and Daddy's room. Maybe it gets in her tummy because she has to eat something and that thing she has to eat tastes bad. That's why I hear weird noses."

"Yeah right."

"Like you know." I shove him.

"Ow, you hit me," he accuses.

"No, I did not."

"Yes you did. You did it on purpose."

"No, I did, not." I shove his shoulders again and I accidentally muffle an oops.

He starts crying.

"Stop being a baby," I whine.

"We are babies," some kid near us says.

"Shut up," I snap.

I turn back to James. "Look, I'm sorry. Please don't tell the teacher," I beg. It wouldn't be the first time I got into trouble by her.

"Ok, fine. But you have to give me something." He wipes his tears with the back of his hand, which is gross to me.

"Like what?" This thing he wants better be something worth giving. Otherwise, I'm telling on myself.

"Hmm, your animal snacks. I'm hungry."

Really, he couldn't think of anything better? "Here. That was the lamest blackmail."

Later during the day, during pick up, James is usually one of the first kids to leave. I'm always last, but I don't mind.

"What's taking my parents so long?" He wonders.

"I don't know. Only 3 kids left so far, so they won't be late. Trust me." I lay on the carpet. It's dirty, but comfortable.

Our teacher, Ms. Heidi walks towards us. "Both of your parents are here. Get your backpacks."

We grab them off our cubbies. "Goodbye, have a good rest of your day!"

"What did I tell you? They were going to show up," I confirm to James.

"Yeah, I guess you're right."

As soon as I see my parents, I yell, "Mommy! Daddy!" They don't look back at me. Instead Daddy's and Mommy's eyes are focused on each other and two people in front of them.

"Uh, I didn't know you had a son," Daddy says to the two strangers.

James runs up to them. I think they are his parents."

"What a coincidence they go to the same school, then," the other guy responds.

"Daddy!" James yells to him.

"Hey buddy." James' dad lifts him up and hugs him.

I walk over to Mommy and Daddy again. I tug on Daddy's black shirt.

"Hi Rainbow." He kneels down and hugs me. Right after, he stands back up.

"Daddy, Mommy, that's James. He was the one I was talking about at the party."

"He was?" Mommy asks.

I nod.

"Well, I'm glad Emery has a new friend."

"I'm her only friend. Everyone else is kind of scared of her," James says.

I giggle. "Yeah. Besides Addy though, she's family so she doesn't count."

Mommy and Daddy look at each other again.

"So," the woman next to James dad, who I think is his mom. "How does dinner at our place tomorrow night sound?"

"It sounds great, we'll be there," Mommy politely says. Mommy seems to be more friendly to them than Daddy. Daddy's angry at the man I think. "See you soon."

"Bye!" The three of them wave.

"Bye Emery!" James greets me goodbye.

"Bye bye!"

Mommy takes my hand while Daddy is on her other side.

"Tess, I don't know how I feel about being with them tomorrow. What if Zed is planning on doing something."

"Hardin, he won't. I believe he changed, and besides, he has a significant other that is capable to leading him to the right direction."

"Just like you did me," Daddy adds, looking right at Mommy.

"Just like that."

(NOTE:

I know, this doesn't sound like Emery's 5 years old, but she is. She's in her kindergarten class. I wonder if 5 year olds actually sound like this irl. Doubt it XD!

Also, I'm just getting lazy, so the rest of the chapters may be shorter.)
