"Presenting the Lake family with the head of the house Larine Lake, the lady of the house Jackelyn Lake, and their one and only heir Adeline Lake" the loud deep voice of the royal court announcer rang throughout the ballroom, gaining her a bit of attention from the Nobles who attended the ball.
Adeline rubbed her arm, nervous as she looked at the large amount of people in the ballroom, dancing, making light conversation, and the small quantity who continued looking at her with stony eyes. It was like having to present to a room filled with her superiors all giving her harsh looks promising unemployment if she messed up. Scary and nerve wracking.
Jackelyn and Larine were watching her every move, they were behind her so she couldn't see them, but she could feel their eyes on the back of her head and the strong grip they had on her shoulders, reminding her of the threat. She was annoyed by them, but she couldn't do anything to go against them, so she walked down the stairs of the ballroom with them both by her side, struggling to walk down with her ball gown in the way.
When she got down, the two strong grip on her shoulders were gone and she felt like a big weight was lifted off her shoulders. She immediately walked away from the two "parents" without even sparing them a glance and looked around. She hadn't had a good look at the ballroom before, but now that she did, she realized just how beautiful it was. The ballroom was immense, bigger than anything she's ever seen. Crystal chandeliers were suspended on the cloudy white of the ceiling, its bright lights revolving like the planets in the solar system making it seem as if it was a disco ball.
As she walked, her lustrous black heels clicked against the wooden glossy floors, her long dark blue gown dragged across the floor as she headed towards the large banquet of food besides the golden satiny walls where she wanted to dine on something other than hard, tasteless bread and warm tap water. Nobles moved away from her as she walked, but she could hear their low whispers aimed at her, none good, all rumors.
"God, you were right, she looks crazy. Shouldn't she be in a mental asylum?" One girl questioned, she didn't know who but her voice was loud and snotty like she intended her to hear it.
Another one was lower than the first girl, it was deep and obnoxious, exhaling arrogance "I would court her if she was pretty, but not even crazy has looks" Loud laughter came from behind her, she didn't look back instead she kept walking only this time, her head was faced downward in embarrassment.
As much as she hated to admit it, words hurt. She was always confident in herself, but when she came into this world she stopped taking care of herself. The soft ebony hair she had first saw when she came into this world was short not even coming down to her shoulders. It was the equivalent to a men's haircut and was wild and grimy.
It was understandable though, she hadn't looked at a mirror for 5 years and for those 5 years she had been letting herself go. Scratching, pulling, and hurting herself everyday. Her looks didn't matter when she did that because she thought she wouldn't care what she looked like, but hearing those insults aimed at her. She couldn't help but feel insecure.
Was she ugly? Disgusting? or was it because they just wanted to insult her?
As she walked they followed, more voices can be heard, but she couldn't understand a bit of what they wanted her to hear. They were all overriding each other, trying to get a rise out of her.
"Why's she here? Isn't she supposed to be kept away from society like the monster she is?" A sweet yet mocking voice asked.
Adeline heard that part, it survived the ugly choruses of insults mixed together and brought its way to her. A harmony of loud laughter can be heard throughout the enormous ballroom. Adeline clenched her fists, feeling tears well up in her eyes. She couldn't break down now, she still had a plan to keep.
