"Now, John, I wish to tell you about my youth and how my ability manifested. What I want you to do is listen and learn from my mistakes. Mistakes I wish I never made. Mistakes I hope you don't repeat. Let me tell you the story of this fool of a late bloomer."
----------
The passengers of the train sitting idle on the tracks became irritated by the fact they were going to be late to their next destination. The only two people on the train who didn't pay no mind to the current predicament was a high schooler with raven hair and a gentle old man in rags who seem to have been conversing the whole wait.
"It began long ago, when I was deemed a failure by my own parents." Uncle Hori started. "They didn't wish for me. In fact, they made it very clear that I was nothing but an accident. An accident with no value to the world whatsoever."
John sat there in silence, listening to Hori's story. He became visibly angry at the words he heard.
'HOW COULD THEY?! THEIR OWN SON?!! Where are they SO I CAN-' John stopped his thought process realizing he was distracting himself from the story. 'Calm down and listen, dumbass. Their probably dead already anyway.'
Unknown to John, Uncle Hori had stopped his story when he saw John's face shift. He sighed, "You don't have to worry about me. I'm over it. Now let me continue."
John nodded and cleared his mind, ready to hear the rest of Hori's backstory.
"Yes, they were harsh on me. Especially when they found out my ability didn't manifest. After that they left me at the side of the road in the middle of no where."
He took a breath and sighed, "Yes. Times were tough back then. But I kept my head held high and never looked back."
"Eventually, I found myself rooting through garbage to survive. Then one day, a lady by the name of Arlene found me near a dumpster. She asked me why I was playing in the garbage to which I said...."
----------
"I'm not playing. I'm looking for food." The young Hori responded as he continued his search for his next meal.
The night was cold and the weather picked up as rain started to fall. The woman who had questioned Hori's actions prepared her umbrella to cover her body from the rain.
Mrs. Arlene Broker had just returned from her job at the bakery when she spotted the young lad and became worried about his condition. Upon closer inspection, she noticed the boy's clothes were tarnished and looked as though he hadn't changed in weeks. His hair was a mess and his face was covered in dirt and grime.
Growing ever more concerned for the boy, she had to ask him a question she dreaded, "Young man.... where are your parents?"
Hori stopped scrounging around for food and hesitated his answer, "Don't know. Don't care. They dumped me on the side of the road and never came back. Now I'm on my own."
The boy continued his task of acquiring food when a gentle hand was placed on his shoulder. He turned to look and saw the woman with dark blue eyes staring straight into his.
"Now this is no way for a boy to live. Come." Arlene gestured to him to follow her under the umbrella.
Little Hori hesitated, worried he would be abandoned again once he was found out to being a cripple. Yet, her warm smile changed his mind as well as his stomach which warned him that he was on empty.
