"Marilyn Grace Flynn! Get down here right now!" I had heard my step-dad scream. I knew I had done nothing wrong, but he was drunk again, just like always. I went downstairs to see why he was calling me and found him standing at the base of the stairs. As soon as I got close enough to him, he grabbed me and dragged me into the kitchen. He didn't care that I was only six years old, he would've done this to me if I were two. Once we got to the kitchen, he pushed me down. "What do you think you were doing upstairs when you should've been down here, helping?" I looked around and saw that everything was where it should be and that there was nothing that needed to be helped with, so I shrugged my shoulders. "How about next time you actually do your part and this won't have to happen!" He then punched me in the eye. I fell back into the countertop.

I was used to this and I knew that my mom wouldn't do anything about it because she did the same thing. My father used to not let her, but he died when I was three, so then my mom married my step-dad who was just as bad as she was. "Get out of here!" I heard my step-dad yell. So I ran out of the house and over to the vacant lot that was less than a block away from my house. I hid in the lot when my parents told me to get out, which was way too often. Sometimes, there were kids that would play there, but it was mostly empty. When I arrived, however, there was a group of seven boys playing football together. I positioned myself behind a bush and decided to watch them play. Everyday when I got kicked out of my house after that, they would always be there.

I hid behind the same bush everyday watching them play and admiring them. There was one boy, who looked the oldest, who was better than the others. There was another boy that looked around my age. After a couple of weeks of watching them, I figured out how they were all related or how they knew each other. The oldest, who was Darry, was siblings with Sodapop and the youngest, Ponyboy. There was a boy who looked my age, but was really three years older named Johnny. Johnny worshiped a blonde-haired boy named Dally. Sodapop and another boy named Steve were really good friends, and the jokester of the group was named Kieth, but his nickname was Two-Bit.

I had been able to watch them everyday for at least two and a half weeks, but one day I was mimicking one of their moves with some dead grass and I fell over into the bush that I hid behind and it made a really loud noise. I quickly went back behind the bush, hoping they didn't notice, but they did. Darry walked over to the bush with the football under his arm and peeked over right where I was hiding. "Hello. Can I do anything for you?" I shook my head no and started to get up to walk away. "Wait. What's your name?" I stopped and slowly turned around. "M-Marilyn." I stuttered. I'm always stuttering. I can't help but stutter with almost every word that I say. "Hi, Marilyn. I'm-"

"D-darry." I finished for him. I saw his surprised look and turned away.

"How do you know that?"

"I've b-been watching y-you guys p-play for a c-couple w-weeks now." They all looked shocked.

"How come we didn't notice you?"

"I-I've been h-hiding behind this b-bush so y-you w-wouldn't see m-me." They all looked surprised and honestly, their reaction wasn't bad at all.

"Do you want to play with us?" Usually girls don't play, but I wasn't going to turn down the nicest offer I've received in my life.

"S-sure. I-I don't really k-know how to p-play, but I'll g-give it a t-try." I walked over to the boys and they assigned me on Darry's team. They said he was the best player, so I was kind of happy.

The game ended and we were about to split, until... "Hey, Marilyn. How did you get your black eye?" Ponyboy asked. I looked down, not wanting to tell them that my parents abused me. I felt it would be weird.

"I wouldn't think someone your age would be getting into fights." Steve added.

"I--it's nothing. I j-just got into a m-misunderstanding." I said looking down. Darry looked a little confused but let it go.
