The school day quickly came to an end and I met everyone outside of the school to walk home. "How was everyone's day?" Two-Bit asked.
"Fine, nothing really happened." Pony replied.
"Yeah, not much happened." Johnny said.
"I was able to jumpstart the principal's car for someone else to use to go buy lunch since their license is suspended." Steve said, sounding very accomplished.
"How was your day, Marylin?" Johnny asked.
I wasn't sure if I wanted to tell them about Brian, but I decided to. "Well... during science today, a boy asked me out. I know that I am technically grounded and I won't be able to actually go out for a movie or something, but I am going to ask Darry today about whether or not he'll allow me to date."
"Wow, okay. So you were asked out, huh?" Steve sounded intrigued. "By who?"
"His name is Brian." I said.
"Brian who?" Steve asked.
"Brian Johnson."
"Wait. Brian Johnson, you mean that total nerd?" Two-Bit practically yelled.
"He isn't a total nerd and he's really nice. Especially nicer than you bozo's." We all started laughing, but the happy expressions on our faces quickly wiped away once we got home and Darry was sitting right in dad's old arm chair waiting for us.
"Did you stay at school all day?" Darry asked. I nodded my head. "Good, now go to your room."
"I actually wanted to ask you something."
"What, and you better make it quick."
"Well, today I was asked out by a boy in science. He is really nice and he isn't dangerous, he's kind of a nerd, but he is really nice. I know that I won't be able to go out any time this month, but I was wondering if after that I would be able to go out with him?"
"What? Why do you want to start dating? You don't need to date. And why would a nerd be asking you out, or anyone for that matter?"
"Did you just say that I'm not a worthy person to go out with?"
"Well if we were the same age and not related, I wouldn't want to be with someone like you."
"What the hell!" Why was my brother saying this to me? "I wish that I never met you! You know just because you don't have a girlfriend and have to work for a family doesn't mean that you can rob me the right of hanging out with people that I actually want to be around!"
"Don't talk back to me, missy! Get out!" I started walking out when he suddenly punched me. I fell back onto the floor, not expecting what had just happened. After some of the pain went away from the hit, I was brought back to when I was seven. My step-father said that very thing to me and then punched me. I was literally reliving the hell of my childhood.
The room was silent. Half of the boys were looking at me and the other half were looking at Darry. The silence was broken by Soda walking in the door from work. "Hey, y'all." Soda then looked around at everyone and saw me on the ground and Darry holding his fist. "What happened?" Right as Soda said that, I ran out. I didn't want to live with someone that was going to be hitting me and taking away my basic freedoms.
I kept running until I ran out of breath, which was quite a few blocks away. I didn't want any of them to follow me. I didn't know where to go, so I found a little shady area under a tree by a baseball field. I decided to spend the night there, and would decide on what to do in the morning. I didn't have any of my school supplies to go right to school tomorrow and I didn't want to go back home, so I thought that it might be easier to stay out here for a while.
The night quickly passed and I woke up from the sound of a mustang rolling in and stopping by the field. "Well look who it is, boys. Marylin Curtis sleeping outside. What, did daddy not want you anymore?" Bob said mockingly as he and the others with him walked closer to me.
"Just leave me alone, Bob. I'm not in the mood, alright?"
"You really think I care if you're in the mood? When is someone ever in the mood?"
"You know what? Fine. Just do what you came to do and leave."
"You heard the girl." Bob was talking to the other boys at this point. He then started whispering, but I think I knew what was going to happen when I heard a blade spring open. I just stood there, not caring about what was going to happen. When I thought I found love in other parents, they died, and then my older brother, who I loved, was going to take care of me. I would've never believed that I would end up away from home standing, waiting to get mugged.
The boys finally walked over to me and pinned me on the ground. It honestly wasn't too bad. That thought quickly left my mind when I felt the switchblade dig into my arm. I wanted to scream, but as soon as I opened my mouth, a handkerchief was stuffed into it. It felt like an eternity until they finally stopped and left. I tried to see if there was someone, anyone, that could help me, but pretty soon, the entire world turned black.
