3 | The Star Spangled Man

Munich, Germany

8:17am, Central European Standard Time, 19th September 2024

There was a clanking sound as the truck's door screeched opened. A shaft of light shone into the previously dark interior. The silhouette of a male figure could be seen.

"They're stealing medicines. Vaccines," Bucky said, looking around the truck. Piles and piles of boxes and black containers were crammed into the space. There were signs like 'Keep Frozen' and 'Caution' embossed on the canisters.

A redheaded face peeked out from behind a box, the light hitting her face and revealing the freckled cheeks and hazel eyes. The man looked up and spotted her. Slowly Karli moved back and disappeared from his sight.

"Hi," Bucky spoke out clearly. This time she moved completely out of the shadows. There was a look of fear and uncertainty on her face.

"Bucky, talk to me. What's goin' on?" Sam's voice sounded through his earpiece. The Winter Soldier turned away from Karli.

"Found the hostage," he mumbled quietly in reply, before facing Karli again. He nodded at her concernedly. "You okay?"

A grin slowly crept onto her face. Bucky smiled too, taking it as an answer. But it wasn't. A second later he was flying through the air, his body hitting the unopened door and tearing it off its hinges. He crashed against the windscreen of the truck behind, only managing to hold on with his metal arm.

"Shit!" He whipped his gaze back to the redhead. She was now pulling a mask over her face, her camouflage jacket flapping around her in the rippling breeze.

Before he could react Bucky felt a hand grasp his arm and pull him up onto the roof of the truck. With a superhuman leap Karli vaulted out of the truck's compartment and onto the second vehicle's roof, landing soundlessly.

"Welcome to the fight, Morgenthau!" Quin's shouted through the wind as the truck continued on the road. He and Diego had pinned Bucky between them, holding him between them. Both of them wore the Flag Smasher masks.

Shouting and thrashing and despite being in their grip, Bucky was able to free one of his arms and sent a blow to Quin's head, but the latter easily blocked it and kneed the man in the stomach. The Winter Soldier doubled over in pain, and Karli kicked at him as she passed. Quin and Diego wrestled him and locked Bucky in a hold.

From the sky there was a soft whirring which gradually grew louder. She gazed up, waiting and intrigued. Redwing appeared, firing bullets at them. But she was ready. The little machine flew just a little too low for its own good. Leaping into the air, Karli grabbed Redwing and smashed it in two over her knee.

"I always wanted to do that," Bucky grumbled, but Quin quickly silenced him with a jab to the face.

Barely a few seconds later a much bigger form flew down towards them. Karli's eyes widened under her mask before she was bowled over by the Falcon.

"Good of you to join the fight, Sam!" Bucky shouted sarcastically at him, before stomping roughly on Diego's foot in an attempt to free himself.

Karli jumped back to her feet, dodging Sam's kick and blocking his punch. Seeing an opening he rushed at her in a bear hug, trying to tackle her to the ground. With a grunt she threw him off, launching the man with so much force that he flew off the truck and onto the roof of the other one.

"Look out!" Quin bellowed at his friends, but it was too late. A red, white and blue shield came spinning out from the sky and hit Dovich in the chest, knocking the man down. The sound of a helicopter was suddenly audible from above.
