Prologue

He remembered being in high school. Playing basketball, going to the movies, doing dumb stuff with friends.

And then there was the Blip. His parents turned to dust and disappeared. But in a way, everything was better. An Earth with 3 and a half billion people was more productive than 7 billion. He knew he was being selfish, but in that five years he experienced the world at its greatest.

Racism and discrimination had been decimated so much it was pretty much non-existent. His parents were gone, so what? They had never cared for him, always on business and leaving him at the Madripoor boarding schools whenever they could. The only people he missed were the friends who had been Snapped. But others helped him. He had a place to stay. Still go to school despite not paying fees. Do what he wanted.

There wasn't the separation and identity of borders, of countries, of nations.

There was one world, one people.

But he also remembered the aftermath. Where the rest of the world reappeared and his turned upside down.

His parents were killed, being in the wrong place at the wrong time, which just happened to be the busiest main road in Madripoor. He was kicked out of Senior year, just when he had gotten a scholarship to one of the best universities in Hightown. Thrown out of the apartment he had been given. All because of the Global Repatriation Council.

He spent months on the street. Ill, hungry, thirsty, tired, cold, angry. Lowtown was a criminal haven. He learnt how to survive without a wink of sleep, steal from all kinds of people, find food scraps and escape from minor crime lords and bounty hunters. He learnt how to defend himself, with a gun, and without.

Until one day Mama Donya found him, rescued him, saved him. Mama Donya was the reason he was still alive.

But she also brought him to Karli Morgenthau. Karli, who gave him a chance to fight back. An energy, both for her Flag Smashers movement, but also every time he saw her.

Because there was one world, one people.
