I love it here in Nantucket but life is getting kind of boring. Mom and Dad and I take walks and eat and swim. While that is not a bad life we have come to the agreement I need to make some more friends. There are a couple of options proposed,
1. I make friends with the 16-year-old girl next door.
2. I make friends with the 16-year-old boy across the street. (Mom and Dad not in favor of this one.)
3. Mom and Dad sign me up for a summer camp.
1 sounds the most appealing and 3 sounds the worst out of all of them. Suddenly I hear a knock on my door. I walk over and open the door to a boy. Sandy hair and defined facial features. His freckles are like stars. I am immediately wooed and he hasn't even spoken.
"Hey, I am Sherrys son from across the street!"
"I'm Syd." I stutter back.
"Great, well my mom wanted me to ask if your family would come over tomorrow night for a pizza party."
"Sure, sounds fun." My voice is shaky.
"Ok then, see you later Syd."
"Bye, boy?" Wanting to know his name, I had forgotten since speaking to Sherry.
He smirks at me then turns around and walks back to his house. I know that this boy knows I want to know his name but he plays with my heart none the less. He is unbearably adorable but I can already tell he and I could never be compatible, and my parents and my rule #3. I need to forget about him.
"Boy" leaving leaves me feeling exasperated and confused so I decide to make dinner for my mom and dad and myself. I think about the girl next door and how having a friend right about now could be so fun. Someone to share all the details of "Boy" with and tell about my various efforts of reinventing myself. For a brief moment I consider emailing Cady.
Out of nowhere my parents appear behind me and my Dad says,
"Sydney, please. Honestly, we saw the way you blushed at that boy. You do remember rule number three right?"
I nod solemnly,
"Yeah Dad, I do."
I close the front door and walk up to my room, settling in with a book sounds great right now, and so that's what I do for the rest of the day.
