Books lined the shelves with dust along the oak slabs layered. Age chipped away at leather and hard back covers, frayed edges slowly peeling. Chains draped over oddly engraved grimoires, restricted to their slots.
"Wong, mind explaining to me who she is?" Strange nudges his friend as you ran each finger along every spine.
"That is the heir to Wonderland's throne. Y/n Hearts, you've read the stories,"
"Alice's adventures in Wonderland? That's a book-"
"About the great Alice who fell down a rabbit hole and caused mayhem all over Wonderland! That little brat made Hatter lose his head in the less literal sense! I hope her tap slap fills the eyes in horizon's doom!"
"U-huh," Strange looks to Wong, "what did she say?"
"I don't think you want to know..." the keeper followed you to help direct places of books and spells.
"Wong, what is a man like you doing here? Wonderland could do with a new library keeper, the royal records are horribly kept by the Orange Ladybug triplets,"
"I am honoured, your majesty, but I think my vow to the sanctum is much more important,"
"Dedication is admired, Wong..." your hand landed on one book stood out from the rest, a single heart engraved on the front. The moment your fingers danced lightly along the front, it took life with a burst of giggles. Sparks emitted from the pages as you quickly opened it. "There's some wonder!"
"What's happening??" Strange readied his shields as you tossed the book on the table. Each page whirred, stopping at a spell, an illustration of a brick well on the next page.
"Wonderwells," Wong states, looking at the book. "Tricky things and very very rare, especially here on Earth," he left and came back with a box of ingredients making you gleam, the cauldron was lit up instantly.
"Rabbit's foot, nails of a hanged man, parchment with coward's blood, sweat from a Dodo bird and... madness!" You spit into the potion making it puff up in a smoke of green and pink. "Excuse me," you use a handkerchief to wipe your lips.
"Did she say dodo bird?" Bruce whispers to Peter who nods. The cauldron was lifted and carried to the foyer of the NY sanctum where you started to recite the spell, contents spilling in a circle.
"Way to wonder, wonder way which will lead wondrous witches way, with whistle while witches wonder at bay," you snap the book shut and toss it to Wong. Moments passed... longer and longer the seconds dragged.
"Is something meant to happen?" Sam whispers to Steve who shrugs.
"Way to wonder, wonder way which will lead wondrous witches way, with whistle while witches wonder at bay!" You repeat but nothing seemed to happen. "Way to wonder, wonder way which will lead wondrous witches way, with whistle while witches wonder at bay. Way to wonder, wonder way which will lead wondrous witches way, with whistle while witches wonder at bay. Way-"
"Y/n, I don't think it will-"
"It will! Trust me, it will!" Everyone's faces fell as they watched the desperation line your features. "It has to..."
"Y/n-"
The group summoned their weapons as you summoned your ax and swung it down at the center of the circle. "WHY-" another hit, "WON'T-" it landed again, "YOU-" again, "WORK?!"
Wood splintered, flung about with each assault until a gaping hole was left, water trickling down the edges to fill the dip. The ax fell to the side as you walked away towards another separate room.
"Well... there goes our freshly polished floors," Stephen sighs.
The cloak soon decided to leave Strange, racing after you. Slumping down on a small couch, your knees curled up to your chest as the fabric floated before you, sitting to hug you tight. Tears started to form and fall without a care, your only words rambling to the cloak.
"I just want to go home... I don't like it here,"
It nods it's collar, wiping the waterfalls and petting your head. As your eyes shut, body lent back against the leather, the spot beside you dipped. "If I may, your highness?"
"Stop being so formal, Loki... I don't care anymore, nothing matters,"
Loki twiddled his thumbs, leaning his elbows against his knees and watching the put out fireplace. "Then, let me say this," he twisted his head to see your damp eyes glaring at the floor. "One failure does not mean impossibility. Giving up does. What hasn't been achieved will be if you keep trying, Y/n,"
"How do you know?"
"Because all my life I thought I would fail, I gave up trying and it led me towards more failure, but my brother refused to let me give up redemption for my past actions, and when I got back up, I succeeded after a hearty handful of trials and errors," Loki scooted closer to you, taking your hand in his. "It's about the trials and errors, for if we succeed the first time, what's to learn? How are we to improve?"
"I just want to go home," you glanced to his thumb drawing circles along the space between your index and thumb.
"And you will, you just need to go through those trials and errors,"
"Thank you, Loki," leaning your head to embrace him, he wraps both arms around you, the cloak slapping his cheek away. "A little rude," you laugh lightly at the cloak's hostility.
"I'll use fabric scissors on it," the god growls to the cloaks who lifted itself mockingly, flying away. "Are you alright now?"
"Mhm," you took the hand he lent once he lifted from the couch.
