Joy laid down beside you in bed with a sigh. After a hard day, she was happy to finally be home. She's felt exhausted from the moment she walked out the front door this morning. She's dragged her feet, putting her best foot forward for the day while her eyes only grew heavier.
You were sleeping soundly beside her and she was more than ready to join you in dreamland. She didn't want to wake you because she felt so tired that she thought she'd fall asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow. She kissed you on the forehead when she arrived home a few minutes ago and she managed to find the energy to tell you goodnight before she attempted to fall asleep.
But she seemed to get a second wind. She lied there for a long couple of minutes before groaning as she realized that the sleepy feeling had worn off. She rolled over carefully, hoping that she wouldn't wake you as she moved around. She put her cheek on the pillow with a heavy sigh and squeezed her eyes shut tightly, hoping she'd sleep in no time.
But she was still awake. As long as she laid there with her eyes closed, tried to match her breathing to yours, and even tried to count sheep, she laid there wide awake.
She rolled onto her back with a huff. She didn't dare glance at the clock. She knew it had to be late. She didn't even get home till close to midnight and she's spent so long tossing and turning, she knew it had to be nearing one am if it wasn't that time already.
She looked over at you. The moonlight shined through the window just enough to let her see your face as you rolled over to face her. Your eyes were still closed and your lips still parted as you slept peacefully. But it brought a small smile to her face nonetheless, bringing her slight happiness despite her busy brain.
She resisted the urge to wake you and tried to handle her lack of sleep on her own. But time dragged by and she stayed wide awake, despite all of her desperate attempts to sleep.
She moved closer to you, yearning for the comfort and security of your embrace. She went to wrap her arms around you, her hand running along your side as she tried to pull you close. Your eyes opened wide as her hand fell onto your skin.
"Joy?"
"Shh." She whispered softly and held you close, dropping her head onto your shoulder and pressed a kiss onto your skin. "Sorry I woke you."
"It's fine. But it's almost two in the morning. Why are you still awake? I thought you'd be out cold by this hour after the day you were supposed to have."
"Me too." She sighed. "But I can't sleep. I don't know how I'm gonna sleep, but I was wondering if you could cuddle with me?"
You smiled sleepily and tangled your legs with hers.
"Happily." You said and held her close, letting her hold you just as tight.
Her head was on your shoulder, her arms tight around you. You made sure that she was covered with the blanket, warm and cozy, before you began to brush your fingers through her hair.
"I've got you." You whispered.
"I love you." She spoke softly.
"I love you more. Now try to sleep." You said, kissing her head softly before you began to hum softly in her ear. She closed her eyes and focused on you as her mind began to slow down and she started to fall asleep.
Despite being absolutely exhausted, you stayed awake until you knew she was asleep. You hummed her favorite song for a few minutes and kept holding her tight until you knew she was asleep.
You listened to her breathe and kissed her head a few times.
"I love you, Joy. Sleep tight, my love." You whispered softly and kissed her temple twice before you closed her eyes, smiling as she curled up as close as she possibly could to you as she slept in your arms and wouldn't wake up until morning.
