I stood in my room, spinning slowly and blushing at the stares I got. All the girls had gathered to see my dress. We'd shooed the boys away and locked the door so Loki wouldn't come in. He was dying to know what the dress looked like, but I kept it in Sif's room since he wouldn't be caught dead sneaking in there. I had expected to just get a simple, white dress. But the royal dressmaker had taken one look at me and shaken her head at my simple request.
"This dress will define you." She had said. "Prince Loki will not be able to look away."
I had been skeptical and a little nervous, worrying that I wouldn't like what she had in mind. She'd planned and created the dress without consulting me. But when she finally called on me to try it on, I fell in love with it immediately. It was strapless and mostly white. The bust was embroidered with silver thread, woven to seem like the dress was laced with frost. It was loose and airy, keeping to my shape and refusing to hide my increasingly large belly. The back was a colored stripe that poured into a dark stream of royal blue. The silver design followed it and gathered at the short train that extended no more than a few feet from my heels.
A servant had come forward to present the shoes that would go with the dress. They were nearly white but with a shine that suggested silver. I stood only a few inches taller in them. The dressmaker had grinned proudly at me."The white I kept only because you asked. But to me? Blue fits your complexion nicely. It is for loyalty, strength." She nodded to herself, evidently incredibly proud of her work. I couldn't blame her. "And Loki is a part of your life now. So I added the embroidery." She shrugged.
"I love it." I smiled at my profile in the mirror. "But there wasn't a design that could, I don't know, hide how big I am? I mean everyone knows I'm pregnant but I'm huge."
She frowned at me. "No. You are beautiful like this. I will not hide it for you."
Frigga had smiled and squeezed my shoulder. "I think it's perfect."
I smiled now and looked at the girls. "What do you think?" Mom held her hand in front of her mouth and wiped her eyes. I smiled and went to her, taking her hands in mine. "I know." I said. She gave me a teary smile, hugging me close.
Her laugh was watery and muffled into my shoulder. She pulled away quickly. "Oh, don't want to get tears on it." There was a knock at the door and Liv peeked out. She opened it and let in Marci and Kat. They ran in, apologizing and saying they were with the guys. They froze as they turned to me, eyes wide. I looked down and smoothed my dress out, smiling. After a moment of silence, they moved as one and wrapped their arms around me. I chuckled and hugged them both.
"You look beautiful, Eb." Marci said quietly. Kat sniffed a little and hugged Marci.
"Our little Ebony is growing up!" Marci hugged her back and pretended to bawl. I laughed and shoved them both.
"Oh shut up!" They laughed and pulled their phones out, snapping pictures before I could even react. I hid my face finally and they laughed. Smiling, I turned to go change. "Gimme a sec." Valda helped me out of my dress and made sure it was put away correctly. I thanked her and slipped back into my trousers and tunic. I had thought that dresses would be comfier but I could get extra large tunics that were unbelievably warm and soft and didn't make me look like a walking balloon. I walked out and asked Mom if she and Frigga would help me with my hair the morning of. Mom nodded, tearing up again.
I turned to Liv and put my hands on my hips. "And you." She raised a brow. "Will you be my maid of honor?" She grinned and nodded. "Bruce can be your companion." I turned to Marci and Kat. "Bridesmaids?" They nodded enthusiastically. "Steve and Tony can walk you."
"I'm down." Marci nodded. "Don't we need to get dressed fitted though?""I know," I groaned, "this is all so last minute and crazy. But you have no idea how fast the dressmaker works. She'll have a dress tailored in hours. As for rehearsal, we'll get that down too."
Kat raised a suggestive brow. "Can Thor walk with me?"
I laughed. "No, he's Loki's best man.""Loki actually wanted a best man?"
