NINE

"Karli Morgenthau is too dangerous for you guys to be pulling this shit."

"Ah!" Bucky calls out as they head out of Zemo's house, ignoring the guilt crawling up in his chest from the argument earlier. "How'd you find us now?"

"Come on, man," Lemar scoffs lightly. "You really think two Avengers can walk around Latvia without drawing attention?"

His partner isn't as good-natured. "No more keeping us in the dark. You could start by telling us why you broke him out of prison."

A flare of pride sparks in Bucky's chest at John gesturing to Zemo, telling him calmly, "He did that himself, technically."

It only seems to get anger surging in John as he steps forward, forcing through gritted teeth, "Oh, this better be an unbelievable explana–"

"Hey, take it easy before it gets weird," Sam interrupts, holding an arm out between the two. It feels like all he's been doing recently is stopping fights before they can get properly started, although not to much avail.

Zemo steps forward, casually telling John, "I know where Karli is."

John stares him down for a few seconds, trying to analyse whether he's telling the truth, before finally (and grudgingly) deciding that he is before quizzing, "Well, where?"

A door closes with a rattle barely a second later, Evelyn going down the steps before catching sight of the men near the steps. "You know, when I said 'go on ahead, I'll meet you there', I didn't mean a few steps away from the door." She just rolls her eyes lightly, scoffing. "But guys, if we're going to get going to the funeral then we need to–"

Then she sees the other two, the ones in uniform, and she slows down. Her soft gaze turns piercing, lips turning up in her familiar trademark smirk. "Well, well, well... look who showed up. It's little Captain America and his best friend, Battlestar."

"Thank you!" The moment the words escape Lemar's lips, John turns to give him a stern look. Battlestar doesn't realise, but a slow second passes before he clears his throat loudly, shrugging and adding in a mutter, "At least she knows my name. Like, come on, man, no one knows it."

Shaking his head, John turns his head towards the unfamiliar redhead. "John Walker. Captain America. And who are you supposed to be?"

"Your worst nightmare."

Her voice is completely serious, and John involuntarily bristles a little before turning his head to look disapprovingly at the others. Bucky meets his gaze straight on, Zemo whistling quietly to himself and having no part of the conversation.

Sam barks an awkward laugh. "She isn't... She's not..." Another awkward laugh sounds as he sticks his hands in his pockets, trying to diffuse the tension between Captain America and the Winter Soldier before it gets worse. "It doesn't matter. She's help. Bucky trusts her, so..." Trailing off, his words hang in the air for a moment before he clears his throat. "Anyway. Karli. All we know is, it's a memorial. So, we're gonna intercept her there."
