Anything Can Happen

I awoke to the familiar vanilla smell of Riley's hair which made me smile. She groaned slightly as I studied her facial structure. She's more than perfect and she doesn't even know I've been working on my vows since the first day I kissed her.

"Babe what do you want to do today?" she asked as I fell back slightly on my side. "Let's just have a lazy day." I said as she smiled. "Perfect idea, you know the saying, Great minds think alike." she said with the cutest smirk.

"Babe let's be nothing." I said as I watched her frown. "Ashton are you serious?" she said as I faced her and held her closer than ever.

"They say nothing lasts forever, so let's be nothing." I said as she grinned wide and captured my lips in a sweet kiss. "Very smart babe, I like it." she said as she popped her lips which made me laugh. Lately it's like her new thing she pops her lips and points her finger in a cute way.

"What's that?" I said as she activated her sassy mode. I could see it in her eyes. "That's what I do boo." she said in a Jersey accent. "Okay Snooki go whip up some Jersey style breakfast for your boo." I said as she erupted in a cute giggle. My phone started ringing and I groaned.

"Ashton please hurry, Liz is sick. It doesn't look good and they won't let me in. Hurry dude I really need you guys!" Alex said in a rushed sense. What the hell is going on?

"I'll be there in a second." I said as I hung up and Riley sat up straight. I came over to her side of the bed. I scooped her up as she squealed. I set her down in her closet and kissed her cheek.

"Get dressed now." I said in a serious tone, she frowned. "What's going on.....is this a surprise kidnapping?" she said as a joke. "No babe you'll see I just can't tell you now." I said as she turned around and raved her closet.

I raced to my closet and threw on a t-shirt and some jeans. I flipped my hair around as Riley snuck up on me. She removed my hands from my hair and did it herself. I grabbed her up again as I carried her to the car. We started driving towards the hospital.

"Alright babe, so you have to promise me you won't jump me, yell, or freak out when I tell you what's going on." I said as I made a right.

"Okay.... I promise." she said unsure. "Liz got sick and it must be really bad because your brother called me." I said as I saw at least ten million emotions flash through her eyes. I knew it was coming. She smacked my arm and screamed out.

"Why the hell didn't you tell me?" she said as I frowned. "You suck at keeping promises!" I said as she groaned. "No time for jokes mister, just speed up a little." she said as I did. She literally raced to Alex as she engulfed him a tight hug. He looked higher than someone on crack. He was surrounded in coffee cups. He looked worn out. I haven't seen him like this since.....the night.

"Alex we are here now, go home change your clothes and come back." I said as he growled. "No I'm not leaving this room until she awakes from sleeping." he said as I looked at the bed. Liz was hooked up to many wires and cords running along her body. She looked pale and vacant. I glanced at the doctor as he motioned we walk out the door to talk.

"Hi I'm Elizabeth's doctor. You must be her friend and his." the doctor said as I shook his hand firmly. "Yes I am can you expound on what's happening?" I asked as his face fell droopy. "Liz has Stage 3 cancer, it's getting worse by the minute if she makes it.....it will be by the graces of God." he said as I sighed deeply.

"Anything can happen sir and I know for a fact. I'm a living witness. I was expelled from a car just a few months ago. I broke my leg and today I walk fine. She'll make it...if not for herself, him." I said as the doctor smiled and walked away. I went back in the room to find Riley holding Alex as they both cried silent tears.

I've never seen Alex like this. He's never been so vulnerable. He hides it away, but Liz finally really opened him up. He knows......we all do. "She'll make it Alex, she's strong and she can do it." Riley sobbed which made my heart ache. I wanted to hold her, but Alex needed somebody.

I went and sat next to Liz in her bed. I grabbed her cold hand. I whispered in her ear. "Alex is going to make it if you don't make this, but we know your strong and you can make it. He loves you, he told you his past. He married you. You changed him, I saw my best friend go from sleeping around to being in love with you. You're going to make it, I know you will." I said as I kissed her hand and went and sat on the sofa as Alex and Riley sat there silent together. I hugged Riley tightly as the doctor came back in.

"Alex Hill, can we speak?" he said as Alex arose. We walked slowly behind as he turned to look at us we walked closer. "Okay so you already know that she has cancer, it's spreading rapidly, but from the scans we can see she's fighting. She still can't prevent everything, so this is pretty serious. She will more than likely be out for another day or so. I want to prepare you for her being tired. She will be very fragile, so hugs probably shouldn't take place right now. Just different things to let you know how it will be." she said as Alex stared back violently.

"I can't hug my fucking wife. You don't tell me what I can and can't do. She's my wife, I know she's fragile. She's the best damn thing that has ever happened to me. You.....will never take that away." he said in a serious tone.

"I'm sorry to upset you Mr. Hill." he said as Alex strolled away. Riley turned him around. "Alex she's your wife. She's your wife." she said and I could see his eyes glaze over.

"I'm sorry. I just can't take all.....this. Riley, my wife is fucking dying and I'm helpless. And for someone to say I can't hold her when she wakes up. She's my everything and like I said I'll hug my wife." he said as he turned away and walked. Riley looked distraught. Now wasn't a good time to comfort her we all needed to be alone. Think.

Alex's POV

As I sat alone in the little room. There was a little light that came from all the lit candles. I exhaled as I sat there. I slowly got up and lit my candle.

"Dear God, I'm sorry. I've completely lost it. I can't think straight, I'm torn apart. Don't do this to me. Please don't take her away. She's all I have away from my past. I know what I did was wrong, please forgive me. I need her. Punish me not her." I said as I shook violently. I could feel myself calm down.

"She is strong and miracles do come true. If anything take me, but don't let her suffer because of me." I said as I dried my eyes and slowly exited the doors. I was engulfed with millions of nurses surrounding me as I heard the loud beeping sounds coming from Liz's room.

"Elizabeth!" I cried out.
