Recap:

"What are you doing out here?" I sharply interrupt my thoughts.

My eyes meet his, awaiting a reply, and I notice how hard he's breathing. He has to be human; vampires don't need to breathe, they usually do though just to blend in. If he was a vampire, he wouldn't be breathing like a human who just ran a marathon.

That's it, he has to be human. I desperately tell myself.

"Well..." he starts to reply, but is interrupted by a loud, resounding thud, followed by 9 crows flying off into the distance from some faraway tree.

*~~~*

His tall figure freezes beside me, his eyes slightly narrowing with caution, and I can feel the tension rolling off him in heavy waves. He looks like he's ready to kill. And for some stupid, unbelievable, unfathomable, annoying reason, it makes me feel safe.

Gross.

I look up ahead just as a loose strand of hair flutters onto my face. It tickles my nose and stings my eyes and swells up a humanly irritation inside of me. I forcefully tug it behind my ear, my eyes coming back into focus.

A massive hunched figure that wasn't there before loudly sniffs the air a few yards away in the cool shade of the trees, and we both quiet our breaths, listening closely. Leaves crackle and twigs snap as the figure lurches forward into the light, softly growling once it sets it's sharp, amber eyes at the two tense figures.

A werewolf, my instincts scream at me.

Well that's great.

Discreetly slipping a small, silver stiletto dagger from the sheath hidden under the large sleeve of my sweater, I position it so it isn't visible to Alessandro; parallel to the inside of my wrist, the tip pointing upwards.

I don't need him asking questions, he is a human after all.

I wasn't planning to attack unless the werewolf did first, -it would put me at a disadvantage with my broken elbow anyway- which was very likely since it had already spotted us. I slightly bend my knees and softly release a breath I didn't realize I was holding.

And I wait.

The werewolf takes a little step forward, the taut muscles flexing on its tall, bulky legs. It raises its snout in the air and freezes, and it's eyes snap to me, the disturbingly sharp green orbs pierce holes into my skull.

Lowering its head slowly, until its neck is bared, the wolf gradually retreats, turning around and breaking into a sprint once it stood a safe distance away.

We stand in silence.

"I... thought it was gonna, uh, attack..." I manage to croak out after a few more seconds.

"Yeah, no shit Sherlock," he snarks back. I just glare in response.

I start to head back to where I left my boots and bag of weapons, quickly sheathing the stiletto dagger in its place, but then I remember something.

I stop and look over my shoulder.

"You still didn't tell me why you happened to be here at the same time I was in the same area," I declare. He is still standing in the same spot, next to the tree he saved me from crashing into.

"Oh, I was just hiking, and I guess I happened to run into you," he coolly replies as his left eyebrow slightly twitches.

"Right, see you in school then," I answer as I start walking in the direction from which I came from, looking for trees I recognize in the process. I hear him mumble something but I can't make out what it is.
