The squawks of birds flying overhead filled the early morning air as cars rolled across the bridge. Through one window, a radio show could be heard.
"Good morning, Arcadia Oak!. It's 4:30 a.m, and if you're still in bed, you are missing the most beautiful sunrise. Clear skies and a beautiful morning ahead. And big news-"
Clanging swords broke through the peaceful sounds, two trolls battling head to head, each encased in their own armor.
"Yield, Kanjigar," the large black troll growled.
Smirking, the silver armored troll panted. "A Trollhunter never yields. I'd rather die!"
The black troll gripped his sword. "Terms, accepted."
He lunged forward, Kanjigar barely dodging and landing a blow on the black troll, knocking him to the ground. Kanjigar pushed his sword towards the troll.
"Your turn, Bular," he stated, staring down the blade. "Yield."
The rising sun filtered into the bridge and landed on Kanjigar's shoulder, the troll gasping in pain. Landing a kick on Kanjigar, Bular stalked towards the now unarmed Trollhunter, who desperately reached for the blade trapped in the sunlight.
"There is nowhere left for you to run, Trollhunter," Bular snarled. "Give me the amulet!"
With a hiss of pain, Kanjigar grasped his sword and leapt to his feet, running up the side of the canal and onto the bridge that hung above. A kick from behind launched the Trollhunter forward into another beam, Bular smirking behind him. The ticking of the amulet grew faster with each passing second. Leaping out of the way of Bular, Kanjigar swung from beam to beam before being cornered.
Bular held him to the edge of the bridge, the Trollhunter's sword shattering into light. Cackling darkly, Bular lowered his hand towards the amulet on Kanjigar's chest.
"It all ends here," Bular crowed. With one hand, Kanjigar pushed the black troll's own into the sun, both screaming at the impact.
Bular recoiled, clutching his hand with a growl. "It's me or the sun. Either way, you're doomed."
"No," Kanjigar muttered as he rose, breathing becoming difficult with his face half in stone. "The amulet will find a champion. We will stop you, and your master. I may end, but the fight will not."
Closing his eyes, Kanjigar crossed both arms and stepped back off the bridge.
"No!" Bular roared, watching his prey turn to stone and smash into the sunlit pavement. He growled, leaning out to grab the amulet before the sunlight hit him once again. Punching the support beam, the troll growled once more before departing through the network of shadows.
If one listened close enough, over the noises of the birds and the cars, they may have just heard the ticking whispers of the amulet, calling out to its next holder.
"James Lake."

"James Lake!"
Groaning, Jim shoved the magazine off of his face and sat up. He slammed one hand down on the alarm clock, the infernal ringing coming to a halt.
"Finally," a voice exclaimed. Turning, Jim saw his cousin Kit leaning on the door frame, car keys in hand and a teasing smile on their face.
"Thought you were never gonna turn off that alarm, Jimmy," they added, pushing off of the wall and making their way back downstairs. "C'mon, get going or you're gonna be late!"
