As soon as Hermione let go of the hourglass and let it spin, the world blurred around the three of them. Colors were flashing by them, and there was a special sucking feeling in Amie's stomach. There was a pounding in Amie's ears, so she closed her eyes until she could feel the ground beneath her feet again.
When she opened her eyes again, they were standing in the Entrance hall, sunlight falling on the floor from the open doors. Harry looked flabbergasted and shocked, staring wildly around.
"Hermione, what --?"
"In here!" Hermione seized Harry's and Amie's arms and dragged them into the nearest broom closet, slamming the door after them.
"What -- how -- Hermione, what happened?"
"Didn't you hear what Amie said? We've gone back in time," Hermione said, removing the golden chain from Amie's and Harry's necks and putting it back into her robes. "Three hours back..."
"But --"
"Shh! Listen! Someone's coming! I think -- I think it might be us!" Hermione had her ear pressed to the door, so Amie did the same. She heard slow footsteps walking past the door.
"I think it's us walking down to Hagrid's!" Amie said quietly.
"Are you telling me," Harry whispered. "that we're here in this cupboard and we're out there too?"
"Yes," Hermione said. She still had her ear to the door, while Amie didn't. "I'm sure it's us. It doesn't sound like more than four people... and we're walking slowly because we're under the Invisibility Cloak --"
She fell quiet, listening.
"We've gone down the front steps..."
Hermione sat down on an upturned bucket, looking very thoughtful.
"Where did you get that hourglass thing?" Harry asked.
"It's called a Time-Turner," answered Hermione. "and I got it from Professor McGonagall on our first day back. I've been using it all year to get to all my lessons. Professor McGonagall made me swear I wouldn't tell anyone," Hermione looked at Amie with an apologetic look, and Amie nodded with a smile, telling her she wasn't angry. "She had to write all sorts of letters to the Ministry of Magic so I could have one. She had to tell them I was a model student, and that I'd never, ever, use it for anything except my studies... I've been turning it back so I could do hours over again, that's how I've been doing several lessons at once, see? But...
"I don't understand what Dumbledore wants us to do. Why did he tell us to go back three hours? How's that going to help Sirius?"
"There must be something that happened around now that he wants us to change," Harry pondered. "What happened? We were walking down to Hagrid's three hours ago..."
"This is three hours ago and we are walking down to Hagrid's," Hermione said. "We just heard ourselves leaving..."
"Isn't it obvious?" Amie spoke up. Hermione's and Harry's heads snapped to look at Amie. "Dumbledore said we could save more than one innocent life, so --"
"Buckbeak!" finished Harry.
"Exactly," Amie smiled.
"But -- how will that help Sirius?" Hermione asked.
"Well, Dumbledore said that Sirius is locked in Flitwick's office, and we can't get there without flying. We rescue Sirius on Buckbeak, and then they can escape together! Neither of them can stay here anyways." Amie said.
"If we manage that without being seen, it'll be a miracle!"
"Well, we've got to try, haven't we?" Harry said, then he pressed an ear to the door and listened. "Doesn't sound like anyone's there... Come on, let's go."
