And suddenly it was gone. The memories disappeared, but Amie's sadness didn't. At least she could see now, and what she saw was Harry lying on the floor and Hermione and Ron standing over him.
"Harry! Harry! Are you all right?"
Hermione seemed almost panicked, and she was slapping Harry's face.
"W-what?"
Harry opened his eyes and looked around in the room. Hermione and Ron grabbed him by the arms and heaved him up on his seat.
"Are you okay?" asked Ron nervously.
"Yeah," answered Harry shakily, casting a glance towards the door. "What happened? Where's that -- that thing? Who screamed?"
"No one screamed." Ron frowned.
Harry looked around in the compartment, and he looked at Amie worriedly before turning back to Ron.
"But I heard screaming --"
A loud snap could be heard, and everyone except Amie jumped in their seats. Lupin was breaking chocolate into pieces.
"Here." he said, giving Harry a big piece. "Eat it. It'll help."
Harry accepted the chocolate, but didn't eat it.
"What was that thing?"
"A dementor." answered Lupin, and gave chocolate to everyone else. Amie took hers, but her eyes stayed locked on Harry's shoulder.
"One of the dementors of Azkaban. Eat. It'll help. I need to speak to the driver, excuse me..."
Lupin left the compartment.
"Are you sure you're okay, Harry?" Hermione said anxiously.
"I don't get it... what happened?" Harry said, wiping his face.
"Well -- that thing -- the dementor -- stood there and looked around (I mean, I think it did, I couldn't see its face) -- and you -- you --"
"I thought you were having a fit or something." said Ron. "You went sort of rigid and fell out of your seat and started twitching --"
"And Professor Lupin stepped over you, and walked towards the dementor, and pulled out his wand," said Hermione. "and he said 'None of us is hiding Sirius Black under our cloaks. Go.' But the dementor didn't move, so Lupin muttered something, and a silvery thing shot out of his wand at it, and it turned around and sort of glided away..."
"It was horrible." Neville spoke up. "Did you feel how cold it got when it came in?"
"I felt weird." said Ron. "Like I'd never be cheerful again..."
Ginny, who was sitting in a corner, let out a sob. Hermione went and put an arm around her.
"But didn't any of you -- fall off your seats?" Harry asked embarrassed.
"No." said Ron. "Ginny was shaking like mad, though."
Harry and the others were quiet for a long time. Lupin came back.
"I haven't poisoned that chocolate, you know..." he smiled.
Harry took a bite, but Amie couldn't manage. She was still staring at Harry's shoulder. She was in an apathetic state, and no one had noticed yet.
"We'll be at Hogwarts in ten minutes. Are you all right, Harry?" said Lupin.
"Fine. But I don't know about Amie." Harry said.
Of course Harry would be the one to notice. He noticed everything, even the fact that Amie's chocolate had melted in her hand. Lupin walked up to Amie worriedly, and hunched down.
