The One Thing I Can't Lose (Steve Rogers x Reader)

Howard and Y/N had finally finished going over his plans. They had concluded they would go ahead and insert micro injectors within the pod. Y/N knew whoever this guy getting the serum was, was going to be in a hell of a lot of pain with the amount of injectors there were.

"So....lunch?" Howard inquired.

"Let's do it."

The pair stepped out of the pawn shop onto the busy streets of Brooklyn and started making their way towards the diner down the street. Y/N was stuck in her thoughts about the night to come and Howard noticed Y/N's joyful demeanor and was curious.

"You seem like you're in a particularly good mood." Howard commented.

"I have no idea what you're talking about." Y/N playfully shrugged.

Howard knew she was lying, but honestly he didn't care because she looked happy. The pair arrived at the diner and ordered their food. They took a seat outside and continued there conversation.

They pair had just hit a pause in the conversation. Y/N was curious about her newfound friends home-life and decided to ask him on the matter,

"So whats your family like?" Y/N started. "Got any brothers or sisters?"

Howard hadn't been expecting the question and was stunned at the women in front of him. No one had ever really asked his home life, he had no problem answering the question if it meant he would get to know more about her as well.

"I have a brother, Edward." She nodded her head."My father was pretty tough on us, don't really talk to anyone in my family anymore. You?"

"Well, I have Rebecca. But I also have a brother...Bucky." She was hesitant to mention her brother, Y/N smiled slightly at the thought of her brother. She was worried even though he had only been gone for a day, she was still worried for his safety. She briefly debated in her head about talking about Steve, but decide against it seeing as he wasn't a blood relative.

Howard was curious about her parents, but she looked slightly upset at the mentioned after the brief sentence about her brother. 'He's probably is off fighting somewhere' Stark thought to himself. Howard made a mental note to try and find his unit to keep an eye on it.

Y/N and Howard wrapped up lunch and headed back to the lab, while Y/n made a new design of the pod, Howard sent a letter to a Colonel down in New Jersey asking for updates on the Project: Rebirth. As the hours went by, more and more of the staff was leaving.

"Well I best be headed out for the night." Y/N said grabbing her coat."I'll see you in the morning."

"Need a ride?" Howards spoke from his desk.

"That wound be lovely."

Howard called Jarvis, as Y/N went to go get her sister. They met each other outside and got in the car for the short ride back to the Barnes house. The sisters got out of the car at the arrival of their destination and waved goodbye.

"Are ya going leave me again tonight dear sister." Becca said dramatically at the top of the stairs.

Y/N rolled her eyes and laughed at her sister. "Yes dear sister, I'm leaving you."

The sisters laughed as they entered to house together Y/N headed upstairs to go get changed while Becca made herself dinner. Rebecca was happy for her sister, she hadn't seen her this happy since at least before the war. I hope the worst of the war is over.

Y/N didn't change much, she changed into sage colored shirtwaist dress and nude character shoes. She felt pretty comfortable with the outfit, but it still looked somewhat classy. Y/N knew that she shouldn't feel nervous, but how could she not? She was about to go on a date with someone whose she's had feelings for since she was a teenager.

Y/N buckled her shoes and stood up, she examined herself in the mirror before deciding that she was ready to leave. Y/N check her watch to see it was almost 7:30, she headed down the stairs and into the living room.

"Well you looked like a hot tamale." Becca commented from the table.

"Don't you have homework or something?" Y/N said shaking her head at her sister.

"No."

"And why's that?" Y/N spoke from the kitchen.

"Did it already." Becca beamed walking into the kitchen. Rebecca had in truth had already done her homework. Y/N shook her head at her sister and prepared for Steves arrival. She knew he probably wouldn't enter the house but she was still anxious.

Rebecca noticed her sisters nervousness and decided to try and relieve some of her sisters anxiety. Rebecca got up from her spot at the table and turned on the radio.

"Would you care to dance, dear sister?" Becca asked putting her hand out.

"What are you doing?"

"Doing what you did for Bucky's first date." Becca started"Now come on, Don't leave me waiting." Rebecca felt bad that Bucky wasn't there for her first date in a while, she also felt bad because Buck had had no idea that said date would be with his best friend.

As the music played and the sisters danced around the living space, the air of the brownstone was filled with laughter and conversations of old memories with their big brother.

*KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK*
