“Can I get a hot cup of cappuccino?” Eva burst through the doors of Victoria's cafe, expecting squeals of excitement from her best friends.
Instead, they both spared her a single glance, scowled, and then focused on what they'd been talking about. Only four people were sitting at tables in the cafe, so Eva didn't feel much embarrassed.
But that was unexpected.
Her already feigned over-excitement ebbing, she padded across the establishment and rounded the counter to stand beside her friends who wouldn't even look at her.
“What's up?”
Cold shoulders was all she received.
What the heck was their problem?
Irritated by their behaviour, she grabbed both of them by the arm and forced them to face her.
“Did someone stick a dick up your asses.” She demanded, copying what Victoria would say when when one of them seemed pissed.
“How did the deal go, Eva?” June was the one who asked, a saccharine sweet smile ardorning the question.
Eva's stomach twisted. Had her friends found her out already? Well, it's not like she wasn't planning on telling them.
“Actually I...”
June cut her off. “We had to meet your mum at the fucking restaurant and ask her how things were going. Only for her to tell us you were having such a fun time on your vacation.”
“You lied to us Eva.” Victoria supplied.
Four people strolled into the café, and with scowls her way, her best friends went to take their orders and ultimately serve them.
When the people had left, they didn't even bother to walk back to her and faced away from her with their arms crossed.
“You guys will let me explain or what?” She sighed, glaring at their backs.
They both spun around with their grimaces still in place. June jammed her hands on her jean clad hips.
“Better start talking then. Why would you tell us you were going on a business trip when you actually went on a vacation.”
“So how was the sex?” Vic excitedly hurried up to her, gripping Eva's arm with all signs of anger gone.
“Vicky, we were supposed to...” June begun to protest.
“Oh, come on, June.” She rolled her eyes. “It's not like we won't be speaking to her for forever. Besides,” She shook Eva's arm imploringly. “Was it great?”
“Vicky what are you talking about?” Eva asked, wondering if they knew about Adam and her.
“Oh come on. You went to Florida and lied about it. It must be because you went to conduct a secret beach fling.”
“I didn't go to Florida.” She clarified.
“You didn't go to Florida?” June asked in a stern voice, stepping forward. ”That's what your mum told us.”
“I lied to her too.” She scanned her friends shocked faces and braced herself for their disbelief with what she was about to reveal. “I went to Jackson Hole...To do extreme sports. "
At first, they both watched her with brows arched, and then June burst out laughing.
“You and extreme sports?” Her voice shook with laughter. “I'm sorry that lie is so funny.”
Eva frowned at her and watched a middle aged woman stroll into the café. “Your trust in my risk-taking abilities is very refreshing."
“Oh come on, Eva. You only ever watched videos of extreme sports but I know you always shiver at the thought of stepping out of your comfort zone. Remember when we went to that ice skating site? You run away before we could even be given the gear!”
