Eva was tired. Tired of her festering inability to concentrate on anything work-related, something which had only began after she'd seen Adam yesterday.
At least while he'd been away, she'd been able to channel all her anger and hurt into productive stuff which was the reason why the company was halfway back to its feet.
Now all she had on her mind was a jumbled mess of chaotic emotions.
Face-palming, Eva slumped against the backrest of her swivel chair with a sigh. That was when a knock sounded on her door. She caught the whiff of his Cologne even before he stepped in.
It was Adam, looking all handsome in a blue shirt with the first three buttons opened on top of black jeans, his hair as messy as ever. Her heart caught when he looked into her eyes.
He smiled at her, and the frozen organ lurched so sharply that she gasped. "Sweetheart." He breathed.
Sweetheart. The enderment he'd used for her sent an army of wonderful memories marching through her mind, things he'd muttered to her whenever they made love, but it didn't take long for the turbulent force of anger to sweep them all away.
She shot to her feet, leveling him a look that only showed her anger. Not the teeny bit of happiness she felt. "What are you doing here, Adam?"
"I came here to take you out for lunch." He announced.
Eva chuckled, actually caught of guard by his unabashed audacity. "Yes, and I'll go with you because this is something we've been doing for the last four months." She shot sarcastically.
Adam let out a heavy sigh, obviously at her hostility. "Eva, so much time has passed. You know we need to talk."
"It's exactly because so much time has passed that I know that I have nothing to say to you." She sneered.
Yesterday, head reeling from seeing him again, she'd nearly given him the time of the day. She'd ran into her house before she could allow herself to grab the hope that had been floating around her.
Adam hadn't cared to give her an apology and explanation the time she'd needed them the most? Why should she listen to anything he had to say now?
"I'm not even going to be allowed to explain myself?" He gave her a frustrated look.
"You made it clear these past months that I didn't mean shit to you. I think there's nothing more you can add."
He stepped further into her office, slowly making his way to her desk. He stopped walking when she glared at his legs. "Eva, I cared about you. I fucking care about you."
She allowed herself to chuckle even though his presence was threatening to mess with her head. "You did? Wow, didn't you just have such a beautiful way of showing it, Mr. Garcia?"
"I followed you that day you found Asha in my apartment, Eva. I followed to tell you you were the only woman in my life, only to find you kissing Brandon on your doorsteps."
"What?" She froze at the new bit of information. Adam attempted to round her desk. "Don't you dare get closer!"
He paused at his spot beside her desk while she stepped away from her chair. "It broke me, Eva. I was hurt and confused that you would move into another man's arms because of such a minor misunderstanding. And I know this is not justification enough, but it affected me more because I'd been already going through so much."
She stared at him, saw the plea in his eyes, and that only made her scoff. "Well, you shock me more, Adam. You left for four months because you saw some stupid kiss?"
