sorry it's been forever. been trying to get a computer to start writing again
"In two weeks, twenty-three of you will be dead. One of you will be alive, who that is depends on how well you pay attention over the next four days. Particularly to what I'm about to say..." her voice drowns in the background for Rybbon, her eyes focused on the tributes around her. She's taller or the same height as most of the girls. She doesn't have much muscle, but she has more compared to half of the tributes. Her eyes linger on the little girl from 11. The little girl's eyes look around before staring straight at the woman in the center. Despite her size, Rye can see that she isn't naïve or stupid. The little girl may have a chance at survival.
Looking at the other tributes, Rybbon's eyes land on the boy from 1, who's expression is one of stone. She sees the muscles in his arms and chest. They're not as big as the boys from 2 or 11 but he could still put up a fight. A moment or so passes before his eyes connect with hers. He looks her up and down, just as she had done to him before looking at her eyes once more. Rybbon keeps eye contact for a second longer before turning attention to the woman in the center, focusing in on her words as she states, "Exposure can kill as easily as a knife." The woman claps her hands before waving the tributes away, everyone going off in their own direction.
Rybbon lingered for a bit, wondering what she should start out with. Seeing as the careers are near the weaponry, she'd rather not go over there at this time. But then again, she doesn't want to learn how to tie a knot or how to build traps, since too many of the other tributes are at those stations. She's pulled from her thoughts though when Chase grabs her arm.
"You can't stand here forever you know?" he chuckles softly, pulling her to the knife-wielding station, right where the careers are. It makes her halt in her steps pulling Chase to her.
"We're going to get eaten alive if we go anywhere near them," she states in a harsh yet soft tone. Chase doesn't falter, though, continuing to pull her towards the station.
"We need as much training as we can get. If we look stupid, so be it. But I'd rather die putting up a fight than hiding." His words sink in, and Rye hates to admit it but he's right. They're already weak, as are most of the other tributes. If they look stupid trying something new, no harm in it then, really.
Throughout the lesson discovers she's not that bad at using a knife. She's not as good as the girl from District 2, who could kill her from twenty yards away, but she can hold her own against someone her size, nevertheless. By the time her lesson was nearly over, Rybbon's forehead was covered in sweat, the muscles in her arms aching.
"Can we go one more round?" she asks the trainer, who lets out a heavy breath.
"I think you've done enough, Three," he chuckles half-heartedly. Giving him a glance, she sees the look in his eyes. They're filled with pity and guilt. It's disgusting. If all he can do is look at her with pity instead of helping her survive, then why is he here?
Turning her attention to a different station entirely, she notices a large rope course, and as her eyes follow it upwards she sees it's across most of the ceiling as well. It reminds her of when she was smaller and had to climb up the side of her building every time the hardware on the roof short-circuited due to the rainstorms. Looking for Chase, she sees he's still learning how to wield a sword, so she goes over the rope course without him. Standing in front of it, it is much larger than she had anticipated, and much more unstable. Nevertheless, she decides to try it out, sticking her feet in between the ropes before beginning her climb.
She's only about eight or so feet off the ground before the rope course flips her upside down, the muscles in her arms tightening as they try to hold up her weight. She groans quietly, forcing herself to continue forward. She gets a few feet higher before her feet slip from the rope, her grip loosening on the rope. Biting her tongue, she makes herself grip the rope even tighter, swinging her legs back and forth until she's able to loop them into the rope. She then intertwines her left arm into the rope, placing the weight of her body onto the inner part of her elbow. Letting go with her right arm, she allows herself to dangle there for a moment, letting a heavy breath, wiping the sweat from her forehead.
"I forgot how hard climbing was," she whispers to herself.
"What are you doing?" Looking underneath her, Rybbon sees Chase, a look of confusion on his face. Rolling her eyes, she begins to climb back down.
"Climbing," she groans, her feet hitting the ground with a loud thud. "Could be trees or buildings we may have to climb up in the arena."
"Smart."
"I guess," she shrugs, rolling her shoulders to ease the tension. "You want to try?" she asks him. Chase snorts aloud, a small smile on his lips.
"I'd break my leg or something." Rybbon rolls her eyes, a small smile on her lips as well.
"It's not bad. You just need a good grip," she states, beginning to climb up the rope course once more.
"Yeah, yeah. Just be careful, Rybbon." His words make her snort.
"Duh." Climbing up the unstable rope course, she makes it up even farther than she did before before she forces herself to stop for a moment, giving her hands a moment to rest. Looking at her palm, she sees blisters beginning to form on top of her old ones. She rubs her thumb over them, somehow feeling her pulse in them. Despite this, she continues upwards, nearly at the ceiling before someone's voice catches her attention.
"Don't fall." Rybbon looks between her legs, seeing the Careers watching her, each with a menacing look on their face. They remind her of mutts at the Backbone. When the weakest of them finally fell, they would surround the mutt, each snarling and growling before pouncing on the lone mutt. Seems like the Careers see her as that lone mutt.
"I wasn't counting on it," she breathes out, seeing the girl from 1 roll her eyes. Rye glances at Chase, only for him to give her a quick shrug. "Fuck," she mumbles quietly, seeing as she no choice but to continue upward, not wanting to look weak in front of them.
When she nearly reaches the ceiling, she sees a slight problem. The next part of the rope course starts a foot or two away from her reach, meaning she would have to lunge and jump to continue. However, if she didn't reach it, she'd fall at least thirty or so feet straight down onto the concrete.
"C'mon, Three! You scared?" one of them hollers from below. Looking down, she eyes them for a moment, trying her hardest to ignore the feeling of her heart bursting from her chest. Instead, she tries her hardest to swing towards it before lunging towards it.
