Beetee told her, "Whatever you do, make sure you don't forget what helped you survive for this long: intelligence. It may not be as good as strength or speed, but it's something that can save you when you least expect it."
His words soothed her for just a few seconds. But now she's alone, zipping up her jacket before she has to enter the arena. All she can wonder is what it'll be like. If it'll be like a rainforest or a desert. She can't swim so she hopes there's nothing water-related. The few rivers and streams back in District Three are polluted by the factories so no one was allowed to be in them unless they wanted to die from diseases.
"30 seconds 'till launch."
Her eyes spot the tube in the corner of the room. It makes her anxiety spike immediately, not knowing what will happen as soon as she steps into it. All she knows is not to step from the platform too early. She remembers someone dropped their token, a little wooden ball, off the platform and got blown sky-high. Maybe if the chance arises, she can use the mines to her advantage. Maybe. Or maybe she'll die before she can even do so.
"20 seconds 'till launch."
Her feet drag her body to the tube, just like how they dragged her up the steps when she was picked for these games.
"10 seconds 'till launch."
As soon as she steps inside, the tube closes. Looking up, she sees a bright light. Maybe she is about to die. She takes in deep breaths, trying to calm her loud heartbeat. As the floor below her rises, a ringing soon arises in her ear drums. The light is so bright she has to shut her eyes, and ringing is all she hears.
After a moment the ringing subsides as does the light. When Rybbon opens her eyes, all she can see is green. The grass has never been that green. Looking to her left and right, she sees other tributes, some she may have to kill. She sees she's on the left side of the cornucopia, but there are items surrounding it. Her eyes fall on the items nearest to the cornucopia, the blades shimmer in the sunlight. Maybe she'll make it. She hopes so.
Looking up at the clock, she sees there are only 10 seconds left. Taking in a deep breath, Rybbon prepares herself, leaning forward in a running position. She may not be the fastest or the toughest, but damn well she's the smartest.
The gong sounds and Rye runs straight toward the cornucopia. While doing so she goes to snatch a bag but gets tugged back. There's someone holding the other side. A girl from maybe Five she thinks. Rye pulls and tugs but the girl does the same. As Rye feels her grip loosen, she instead lets go of the bag, knocking Five onto her ass. She grabs the bag from her and runs to the cornucopia. Running inside, she spots Glimmer trying to stab at the boy from 10 but missing every time. As another tribute runs at her, Rye grabs a small knife from the ground and throws it at 10, hitting him in the leg. He screams out but is able to get out of the cornucopia.
Glimmer screams as the boy from Six goes to kill her. Rye jumps on his back, forcing her arm around his neck and pulling him back. He runs backward, slamming her into the wall, trying to make her let go. He does so once more, but Rye is still hanging on. When he finally falls to his knees she lets go, Cato coming in to finish him off. Rybbon has to look away, not wanting to see his guts all over the floor. When she does so, she spots an open crate full of swords and knives. A quiet sigh of relief escapes her, finally feeling like she may make it.
"Grab what you need," Cato says. She looks over, seeing him wiping the blood from his sickle. She looks down to see the boy from Four bleeding all over the floor. "We're going hunting tonight."
