"HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday, dear Marlene. Happy birthday to you!" The hall sang as Mary and Adelia stumbled in for lunch. They both paused at the door, looking at each other. Neither of them knew that it was her birthday. It was Halloween tomorrow and that's all people had mentioned. And everyone seemed to know that it was her birthday too. From Slytherins to Ravenclaws, people gathered round to say a 'happy birthday' to the blonde. Of course, her brother was part of that group. Stood with Marlene's brother and the other Hufflepuff's.

"What do we do?" Adelia whispered to Mary who looked as if she was calculating a plan.

"Sit down, eat. Wait for the crowd to disperse, say happy birthday. Leave." The girl responded, not too sure. With a nod, they took the seat near the door to have breakfast. Adelia went for her usual, a bacon butty and a chocolate chip muffin. It was something that she had grown fond of as it was a treat she didn't get at home. In the morning, she got buttered toast and sometimes pancakes with golden syrup when she was at home.

"Morning!" A cheery voice called, taking a seat opposite the two best friends. "What did you get Marlene for her birthday?" Lily whispered, leaning in as she scooped her plate with scrambled eggs. A silence followed which caused the redhead to frown at the two girls. "Hello? Earth to Mary."

"We didn't know it was her birthday. Besides, we hardly know her." Adelia retorted, rendering the redhead silent. Mary couldn't help but let out a burst of laughter as the brunette tried to stop herself from rolling her eyes.

"Well, I got her some muggle chocolate. I think she'll like it." Lily commented bluntly, shovelling her breakfast down her.

"Have a day off," Mary muttered under her breath which caused Ada to choke on her bread. There was a large slap on her back that stopped her from choking and led to a small coughing fit that was rather amusing to her best friend.

"Tosser," Adelia commented, causing Mary to stick out her tongue childishly at the brunette. Lily looked far from impressed, looking down her nose at the two. She didn't understand the pair, not even remotely. Yes, Lily tried to be kind and considerate but her life was so sheltered. The girl didn't understand their messy clothes and outlandish talk. Her parents had taught her that no lady should act in such a way. They were both totally different from the neighbourhood kids.

"Do you have to use such language?" Lily sighed, raising her brow at the brunette. Her eyes flickered up and Ada frowned at the girl opposite them. Prissy Princess, Adelia thought and she could tell that Mary was thinking something similar.

"Well, I could use wanker, if you'd like." The brunette countered, flashing her a wide smile that Lily scoffed at.

"I'm only trying to help you." She huffed.

"And that's the problem. Apart from attitude, why would I need help." Adelia countered, finishing her food.

"Have you seen the state of your hair, couldn't even get a rake through that? You definitely need help." Mary commented, losing the cereal off her spoon as Adelia nudged her. "Excuse me! You owe me four Shreddies." She scoffed.

"Best be going. Severus is showing me how to do a new spell! Did you know that you can make up your own spells? It is rather impressive." Lily gushed as the two smiled kindly at her. "Here he is. Sev!" She beckoned and Ada had to hold back up a groan. According to Aisha, he was a 'stuck up slimy git' who' trails around the older students like a lost puppy'.

"Lily! There you are. Who are these?" He asked snottily.

"Woah, get any closer and your nose'll be in my cereal!" Mary protested, rather protective of her breakfast now that she had dropped some. That comment only seemed to anger the boy, not like Mary noticed nor cared.
