Chapter Five

"You disobeyed every order I gave you" Gabriel barked, and Marinette winced, head ducked to the floor. "A useless sentimonster, and you were out for over an hour! None of this was necessary and it's only gonna hurt you"

"I'm not going to get sick" Marinette protested, and Gabriel rolls his eyes "I'm not. I refuse, okay? Adrien needs me, Nathalie needs me, you need me- look, I have so much left to do and-"

Mr. Agreste scoffs and moves to face the wall, but Marinette can see weariness in his eyes. "She did too"

"Come on, Miss Dupain" Nathalie says, her voice as calm and collected as ever, whilst Marinette was panting as she tried to dodge the training spear Nathalie held. Her own training weapon had fallen from her grasp minutes before, and she still hadn't formed a coherent plan on how to get it back in her hand.

Just as she started to reach for it, the top of Nathalie's pole hit her in the gut and she doubled forward. "Ack-!" she cried out, and Nathalie removed the pole and laid a gentle hand on her shoulder.

"We just need to keep training, you're doing fine" the assistant reassured "But maybe we should reschedule your meeting with Chat a week-"

"No! No, I can do it. You're right, I just need to practice" Marinette interrupts, moving to pick her training weapon back up. Nathalie stops her.

"Let's try the knives, alright?" she says, moving to a drawer and picking up a few blunt daggers. Gabriel was still working on the copy of Azura's weapons, so these would do. "Just try aiming them, alright?" Marinette nods, rubbing the blade's handle in her hand. Her fingers shake and Nathalie pressed a gentle hand to her wrist. "Just like you would throwing a skipping stone, try and hit the middle"

Marinette nods slowly, inhales and thinks about her morals, why she's doing this. For Adrien she thinks, and throws the dagger. It hits the wall, nearly a foot away from the bullseye.

"Mari!" Adrien calls, dashing towards her with a grin. Marinette shuts her sketchbook and staggers to her feet, stuttering a hello. Adrien smiles at her and tugs her towards the school's exit "I just wanted to say" he starts, his voice much more hushed than usual. "Thank you for being such a good friend. E-Especially in these past few months, with Nathalie and everything... I don't know what I would have done without you"

Marinette smiles back at him, placing her hands on his shoulders "Adrien it's really no problem, m'kay? A-And Nathalie, she's getting better, just like I told you! As strong as ever!" It was true, although Nathalie would still have the occasional dizzy spell, she was getting better and could easily beat Marinette's ass in training.

Adrien's eyes soften and he nod happily "I know, I know. I was worried about nothing, it's just... I didn't want to lose her and... well, that's not the point right now" he glances at his hands, rubbing them together, and Marinette realizes he's nervous. "I... I was never a great friend to you Mari. Especially with Chloe and Lila and even Kagami... Not only should I have noticed, but I should have done something, not just sit by and tell you everything was going to be alright"

"Adrien-" Marinette started, but he continued on.

"I thought I was being a good friend, but I wasn't, and I thought I could be friends with everyone, which I can't... But Mari, more than anyone else here, Chloe or Lila or anyone, I want to be friends with you. So... so even though they stopped harassing you a while ago, I want you to know that if they or anyone else attack you or upset you, I'm on your side and I will do anything I can to support you. You're so busy helping me and helping everyone else, the least I can do is help you, even a little bit. You're so important to me Mari, and I wish... I wish you could see how important you are to all of us"
