13. The Ego and the fury
Later in the day, Ego had found his way back to the Memory Palace in the Frontal Barrier after escaping the Stem Forests, its white halls now disgraced by the presence of Superego.
"Ego. You have returned, but I see no trophies" Superego observed the injured and battered Ego enter the grand hall on the second floor. The room was now more lit with a greater number of candles than before prior to the blackout.
"that's because there are more now. The girl got away, helped by Fred and a shadow creature" Ego explained.
"Fred?!!!" Superego slammed his fist on a handle of the grand throne and got up from his seat.
"sir, go to your happy place. You can't take over the world by losing your cool" Ego advised to the angered evil one.
"judging from what you like, hey mean business. No matter. He may be alive for now, but it won't always be that way" Superego looked back to Ego, slightly calmer than before. With a snap of his fingers, the outside of the Memory Palace changed from a brilliant white to a dark black emulsion. He then walked through the halls of the palace, where a single smiling white mask rested on a pedestal beside a window looking out onto the Wall of Reality.
"what's that?" Ego saw Superego pick up the mask.
"my ace in the hole, Ego" Superego threw the mask on the floor and watched as it erupted in a gray soot and smoke, morphing itself into a humanoid creature with long sharp claws and the white mask for a face.
"greetings, master" the masked being turned to Superego.
"what is your moniker, great spirit?" Superego asked.
"Persona" the being responded.
"very well" Superego said.
"what is required?" Persona questioned.
"journey down to the House of Balance. There, you will find your quarry. Ego will be joining you" Superego ordered.
"what?!...I mean...yes, sir" Ego changed his tone when he saw Superego's face change expression.
"most likely Fred and his little friends will be trying to get to the next layer of the mindscape. I do wish I could come and watch them die, but I have business here to attend to. Now get moving!" Superego looked out the window then saw off his growing clique into the night.
