9. Whisper of the servant

After an entire day of traversing the mindscape, Ego was gaining on his target. Ever since Anima had escaped from his grasp, he sought to redeem himself in the eyes of his master. By now, the shadow creature had descended even deeper into the Subconscious realm to the boundaries of the Stem Forests as the sun rose on the horizon. His blue eyes scoured every inch of the terrain until he found a single intact footprint stamped onto the purple grass.

It lay at the boundary between the plains and the Stem Forests, a sign of something that no usual being could make. Shadow creatures had no footprint at all, while the smaller residents of the realm made little plods that were quickly obscured. The print Ego saw was similar to a human and had not been taken by the grass just yet, meaning whoever made it was not too far away. He took a break by climbing onto a large rock sticking out from the plains with a view of the tall forests.

"why am I doing this anyways? Ego looked up into the red sky above.

"what do I get out of this?" he contemplated.

"whatever. If he wants the girl, he can have her. I don't care. If I were to leave his side, he could come for me. He needs me, but he's perfectly capable of taking care of himself" Ego objected.

"either Fred or Anima could have made that footprint, but why would they dare head into the Stem Forests?" Ego continued before leaping off the rock and sprinting off into the dark woods of the mind. For now, his blue eyes looked out onto a world where he was a subordinate to its most diabolical being.

Ego could only wait until Superego completed his plan and released Ego from servitude, where he could happily live in a retirement of blissful ignorance with a part of the mind to call his own. That was his dream in a land where dreams were born and could be played out as if it were real. Ego desired a purpose and an independent life, which he thought he could achieve if he served his creator until his task was complete. Superego needed a sidekick, or at least someone he could vent his frustrations to. In a sense, Ego was the closest thing Ego had to a friend.
