25.          Superego's world

Deep inside the expanse of the Memory Palace overlooking his new kingdom, Superego sat grumbling to himself on the marble throne. There was a sense of unease around him, something was definitely wrong.

"they have failed me. all of them. I can't trust anyone, only me. Yes, just me, and me alone. After I give them life and a purpose, they don't even have the audacity to return and face me like the cowards they are. I don't need anyone else. I was the one who started all of this, and yet my faithful have abandoned me. Dare as they might to join forces with Fred. Ego shouldn't. hopefully he will still be of use to me." Superego got off his throne and headed out onto the balcony overlooking the back courtyard. Beyond the palace walls lay his target, the looming boundary not far away that separated him from the Conscious realm.

"they're all out to get me. I just know it" Superego wiped his forehead, seeing droplets of red sweat on his sleeve.

"sir?" Ego's blue eyes came into view from inside the palace, calling out to his master.

"oh, Ego. Good to see you" Superego turned back to the palace, feigning a smile of relief.

"are you alright?" Ego tilted his jet black head slightly.

"of course, why wouldn't I be?" Superego chuckled and shrugged his shoulders.

"I'm sure your minions will return with either Fred's head or him in chains" Ego walked toward the balcony edge, lined with white pillars that glistened in the sunlight like ocean pearls.

"how can you be so sure?. I made them weak and petty. What happens when they complete their mission and get bored?. They might turn against us" Superego clasped his long fingers into fists, looking down to the floor in despair.

"if you made them weak, we could easily overpower them" Ego remained hopeful.

"I swear, the minute I break through that wall, everyone will pay dearly for their dissidence" Superego turned back out to look at the Wall of Reality.

"not me, right?" Ego poked around from behind.

"as long as you do as I say, you have nothing to fear. You may be spared if I feel like it, but just like the rest, if you step out of line or fail to heed my word as if God was screaming in your ear, I would be happy to accommodate you in a shallow grave beneath the mindscape" Superego gave a gentle threat while edging in closer to Ego, the nerves building up inside the latter for fear of being his boss's new punching bag.

"I just hope you know what you're getting us into" Ego edged up as Superego backed down to his retreat on the balcony.

"you say that as if I don't know" Superego turned his head back.

"no. it's not like that" Ego put his hands up. He knew that Superego possessed a great deal of strength, with unbridled fury to match.

"if it weren't for me, you wouldn't be here right now by my side, would you?!!" Superego stretched out his hand, which extended across the balcony to grab Ego by the scruff and draw him in close.

"but sir, do you really want to go through with these plans of yours?" Ego tried to reason.

"when I rule Fred's body, I will finally have the power to fulfil my darkest urges. I don't care who or what gets in my way. True satisfaction comes from power and influence over the weak who don't deserve the life they've been given. Keep that in mind lest your own opinions go to your head and makes you soft" Superego gave a look to Ego that was borderline between angry and bored.

"your plans could get us killed, and I'm not intending on having that happen to me any time soon" Ego objected.

"then if you want to live, I highly advise you do as I say. Understood?" Superego's red eyes stared straight into the blue orbs of Ego.

"yes" Ego solemnly whimpered.

"good. I'm glad we had this little talk. It has given me a lot to think about. Issues of trust and power is all" Superego dropped Ego then returned to his view of the barrier. Waving his hands in the air, Superego conjured darkness that spouted onto the courtyard and grew into lines upon lines of sleek dark legionaries, each one armed with glowing red eyes sharpened black limbs that could be makeshift swords at will. They were all similar to Ego in design, except sleeker and bearing no soul. They lived off blind servitude to their creator, served with a side of bloodlust and violent tendencies for good measure.

"what are you doing?" Ego looked over the balcony to the intimidating force that was now occupying the courtyard.

"I am taking the first step to making this mind a better place" Superego explained.

"behold, a loyal army. Sure, Fred could get over a wall with his little friends but see if he can outpace one of these soldiers" Superego turned back into the palace, chuckling to himself before devolving into a mad howl of hysterical laughter that echoed through the premises.
