CHAPTER SIX: LETTING GO AND LATCHING ON
Nick’s POV:
‘’Wow my palms are sweating so badly!” Joe stood in front of the mirror where he had been readjusting his tie just moments earlier, wiping his hands on his pant leg. “I can’t believe I’m seeing her again tonight, for this first time in person since 2010” He wiped his brow with the back of his sleeve this time.
He really was nervous, I thought.
The night (or day) had come. It had been a week since Demi and I had had drinks at Charlie’s and it was agreed we would go to dinner with Joe and Delta. Imagine my surprise when she had said she still cared for Joe. What had been an awkward situation had quickly changed into a win-win moment for us both. I had wasted no time in making dinner reservations as soon as Demi had a free night from her busy schedule. We were heading out to dinner at one of our favourite Mexican places in town; I had remembered how much Demi loved Mexican food. We were to meet there at half eight, the time was just past eight; and we still had to pick up Delta.
“Well we’d better get outta here before you dissolve into a puddle of sweat on this floor” I grabbed my dinner jacket and headed out the door. Joe sauntered out behind me, repeatedly wiping his hands on his pants.
(BREAK)
“Sorry for being late. I got an urgent business call that I had to attend to.” Demi apologised, sliding into her seat next to Joe; across from Delta and I.
We had already been thirty minutes at the restaurant. We had gone ahead and ordered a few wine spritzers to pass time and were already on our fourth round. I had had a slight panic attack thinking she had stood us up at the last minute and I could sort of see the same look on Joe’s face across from me. Delta on the other hand hadn’t been too gracious about it.
“Great, she’s making us wait. How Hollywood of you her!” She had exclaimed making an annoyed face.
Now as Demi had sat down to join us I could feel Delta stiffen beside me. This wasn’t going well.
“It’s okay we got started on drinks but I think now we can all order?” I replied, motioning for the waiter to serve us.
“Sure” had been the reply from all three.
When the waiter left with our orders I turned to Demi, “By the way, Demi this is Delta my girlfriend”
Her face suddenly broke out into her familiar warm smile. I felt a sudden tug in my chest seeing her smile. Hers was one of the most beautiful smiles, I thought gazing at her.
“It’s finally nice to meet you. Nick talks about you all the time” she said.
“Well I hope he does” Was that a little hostility I sensed from Delta? I bit my bottom lip. Was she still annoyed at Demi for making us wait on her? It hadn’t been that long surely.
“Oh he can’t shut up about you” Demi continued, which seemed to satisfy Delta slightly because a look of pleasure and vanity came over here at that moment.
“I need to visit the little girl’s room, so excuse me” Delta was on her feet and made her way away from us.
Joe I noticed had momentarily been sitting quiet as a mouse next to her. “And of course you know Joe” I interjected with humour. Please don’t let this be awkward, I pleaded in my head. Joe blushed bright red then but recollected himself enough to turn to Demi and say “Hey stranger” teasingly.
“Wow how long has it been!” Demi replied to him, smiling on. She reached out to hug him then, and I could almost see the relief on my brother’s face as he hugged her back.
