____________________________________My first tutoring session with Reese was not off to a good start.
First of all, she was late.I had been waiting for more than 20 minutes and she still wasn't here.
No call, nothing.
I was starting to get annoyed, I hated wasting my time.We agreed to studying at my place, only because my dad would get home at about 7 and he didn't mind me having guests over as long as I told him about it beforehand.
Also, I hated the idea of being in an unfamiliar environment and that's exactly what Reese's home would be.
Lastly, it was raining.
Leaving the house when it's cold would be a minor inconvenience but still an inconvenience that I wasn't willing to deal with. Finally, I heard the doorbell ring.
I sighed and got up, going to door and opening it in one swift movement, "You're late."
Reese looked at me confused, hands stuffed in her puffy jacket, "Uh, Hello to you too."
"You're late." I repeated, looking her up and down.
"Can you let me in first?"I sucked the air in through my teeth, annoyed at her blatant nonchalance.
Nevertheless, I stepped aside, "Come in."
She raised her eyebrow, stepping inside, "Thank you." She turned to face me, "And I'm not late."I narrowed my eyes at her, "I've been waiting for 20 minutes."
I motioned to the clock, it was 2:20pm.
Reese moved her jacket sleeve, showing me her watch which read 2:00pm.
"Actually, I'm right on time." she said.
"How are you so sure that your time is right and mine is wrong?"
"I'm very rarely wrong." she answered as she proceeded to walk further into the house, "Is there anybody else here?"
I decided not to argue with her,
"It's just us."I watched her as she looked around, running her fingers across every piece of furniture.
She already looked comfortable, as if she had been here multiple times before. She still hadn't said anything, so I decided to break the silence.
"So, Do you wanna start?"
"Sure."
I nodded and signaled her to follow me to the living room, where there was a large table and all the necessary books and stationery set up.I looked over at her, expecting her to make a comment about me being a nerd or something along those lines.
All she did was let out a slight chuckle, "Huh, nice."
"Thanks...I think." I said, taking a seat, "Sit down."She did as she was told, quietly.
Something was off.
There were no sly or flirtatious comments, just silence.
A complete change in her demeanor.
Did something change since the last time we spoke?I chose to ignore it and started summarising the story of Macbeth in simple terms, just to give her a rough overview.
Reese made notes as I explained, her handwriting sloppy."Uh..." I said finally, watching her write the last words of what I had said down, "Are you getting it so far?"
"Kinda, yeah."
"It'll make more sense when we go into depth with each chapter. We also have to discuss the themes and so on." I explained.
"For sure." she answered, looking down at her notes.I bit the inside of my cheek, trying to decide if I should address her behaviour or not.
I sighed, opening the book of Macbeth and giving Reese a pencil and highlighter, "Make more notes as we go along."That's exactly what she did.
No jokes in between, no smiles, it felt like a strict business transaction. After an hour or so, I looked over at her, "We should probably take a break."
She looked up at me, "You sure?"
"Yeah, it's good to take breaks in between studying." I got up, stretching slightly.
