"Are you sure?" You asked. The woman gave you a warm smile and squeezed your shoulder as you fixed your clothes.
"I did a pregnancy test." She sighed when you didn't look convinced and added. "Of course I am! I've done this hundreds of times. I'm sure you and your young man will be very happy." She said as she watched you pick up your bag and jacket.
When you stepped out of the building you brushed past someone, too busy with your thoughts to notice that it had been Ada with one of her friends. She hadn't said anything but turned to watch you hurry your way home, knowing exactly why you'd come out of the building, she'd been taking her friend there for the same reason.
Staying out of sight and out of mind was harder than you thought. When you went to the shops John bumped into you and told you that Tommy wanted to see you. When you tried to point out that you and Tommy were through, and that you no longer wanted to see him, John seemed to be suddenly unable to hear you. When you glanced over your shoulder on the way home you could see two people clearly following you home. You started looking into a way to get out of Birmingham.
There was a loud rapping at your door later that day. You'd been packing your bags, having rung ahead to find out how far away you could get on the money you had to hand. The thumping grew louder and louder, you hear your old neighbour yelling out of her window for them to quiet down. You hurried to pack all your things into your bags. Your neighbour had promised to take in anything left behind and keep it at her home until you could send for it. She had given you an extra old suitcase and insisted that you take some of the clothes her grandchild had grown out of. A car beeped outside, three times like you had asked them to when you called for the taxi. You hurried to dump your bags in the foyer of your home and quickly double checked you had everything you needed. When you pulled the door open Tommy was there. The Taxi man sat, staring ahead with John in the front seat next to him and Arthur leaning against the car.
"(Y/N)!" Tommy said in almost a gasp as he reached to hug you. You tried to step out of the way but he grabbed at your arm, reaching to hold your chin between his fingers. "Ada told me the news!"
"There is no news Thomas." You said firmly. He frowned at you, glancing at your bags on the floor.
"No. Ada saw you and she asked..."
"Ada is wrong. I wasn't there for that." You insisted. He frowned at you and let you go, which you took as an opportunity to grab as many of your bags as you could and hurry out to put them in the back of the car.
"We need to talk!" Tommy demanded. He tried to grab at you again but you darted out of reach and grabbed the last of your bags, slamming the door shut and shoving your key through the letterbox, making the only one able to open the door, your neighbour who was watching through her curtains. John had hurried out and rounded the car as if he hoped to herd you towards Tommy. You hurried into the front, beside the driver, bags clutched in your arms. He glanced at you and without uttering a word he started the car and pulled away. He even helped you get your bags onto the train and asked someone to sit with you until the train was off. The last thing you saw from the window was Tommy, Arthur and John hurrying into the station to watch the train pull away.
"Madam. A friend of yours called the station, she said she lived next to you. That you had some trouble. There is an officer on board with a private room. He has offered to allow you to use it." A ticket collector said to you. You thanked him as he helped you gather your bags and led you to the back of the train where the larger, private seats were.
