THREE MONTHS LATER

Bani’s stomach clenched in pain as she held on to the bathroom slab and puked in the wash basin. Veer held her hair back and gently rubbed her back. He was trying to find words that could console her at such an ill-fated time. Sweat dripped down her brow through her hair. The taste of vomit as it passed between her open jaws filled her with guilt and regret of not being able to spend enough time with her Meera Di and Tapish Jiju. She was supposed to be with them the moment their car met with an accident. Now that they were gone forever. The memory of seeing their crashed car on a highway stormed back into her head. Her eyes watered thinking about the inescapable memory of how she was asked to complete the last rites on her sister’s funeral pyre. Because her father in law had declared he did not care about the death of a greedy woman. Even today Balwant called Meera a gold digger. Even after her death. She was shaking when she had to fire the pyre. She thought she will have to do it alone but Veer held her hand. They did it together. He was there for her when she needed someone. Like always. She wiped her mouth and washed her face after which Veer tied her hair in a low pony tail.

“You need to get some sleep Bani. Take one of the guest bedrooms and rest.” Veer requested. Bani shook her head. She did not want to stay in the Singhania Mansion longer than necessary. She came here after a really long time for Meera and Tapish’s condolence meet.

“I will just stay here for a little while. I want to sit close to Di and Jiju. Then I will leave. I promise.” She spoke in between sobs holding on to his kurta.

Veer cupped her face and explained to her calmly. “You can stay here for as long as you want Bani. Please don’t get stressed. This is your sister’s condolence meet. You have to be here more than anybody else. You go and sit. I will get you a glass of water.” She nodded.

“Tell me immediately if you need anything. Okay?”

“Okay”

Bani sat on the mattress in the hall and kept staring at the garland hung on Tapish and Meera’s picture frames. Why did both of them go away so soon? They were good people. They deserved to be happy, not die. A servant came and served a glass of water to her. She looked around. Her eyes searching for Veer. He was talking to someone on the phone.  Had Veer, Daksh and Ponky not been there, Balwant would not have cared for Meera’s funeral.

“What the hell do you think you are doing in my house?” Balwant angrily whispered. Bani was frightened seeing him beside her.

"I am..." She fumbled.

"It will be better for you if you leave my property right now Bani Sharma. I don't need your evil eye in my home." Veer noticed as Balwant angrily whispered to Bani.

"It is my sister's condolence meet Mr. Singhania. Please let me stay for a little while." Bani begged him

"Your sister ruined Tapish's life. I will never let you do the same with Veer. Get out." Balwant was furious.

"You know I love Veer Mr. Singhania." Fresh tears formed in Bani's eyes. Now because of the way Balwant was behaving with her.

"Tell me what your love is going to cost me. I will sign you a cheque." Balwant was disgruntled.

Bani could not tolerate any more nonsense. She got up and started walking to get out of the mansion. She saw Mayuri standing at the door. She did not want to care about it right now. Her heart broke and bled an ocean through her eyes. Her soul felt wafer thin. Her body trembled and chilled.

"Where do you think you are going Bani Sharma?" Mayuri blocked her way at the door and gripped her arm.

"I am the one who is destined to be Mrs. Veeranshu Singhania. You can do everything in you power to try to keep him but I will be his life partner. I will wear the sindoor and mangalsutra of his name." Mayuri declared with a proud smirk.
