'Unnie, why is there so much turbulence?' I asked Yoona unnie while we were aboard the plane. We took off about an hour ago and apparently mid flight there was too much shaking and an unexplained uneasiness I felt. I wanted to call Bin right away but then we were asked to switch off our devices.
'Oh, it must be cloudy today,' unnie replied as she laid back down on her own seat. We were in business class but I wanted to talk to her so I asked to have us seated together. She had always exuded a calm demeanor among all of us, and that's why I chose her to be my companion for my trip, since most of the girls are also busy.
'Do you think so, unnie?' I asked, trying to calm myself. She looked at me and smiled.
'Yah, Yejinah. Just stay calm. We will be alright,' she said, before she asked me to recline on my own seat.
What was happening to me? I asked myself that question since I was never the uneasy one. I am organized, I take things with a little bit of caution, but then right now, it seems like I am otherwise. I couldn't help but fidget and even when I wanted to see a photo of my husband and kids, I couldn't do so. My phone was off so I had no other choice but to close my eyes and relax.
A few minutes later, she asked.
'Yejinah, why are we taking this trip?'
I shifted to her side and smiled slightly. I actually felt relieved that it was her whom I was traveling with instead of my family. Because if the latter happened, I wouldn't know what I would be thinking. I actually saved Bin from a lot of worry.
Or am I really?
'Because Binssi decided to give me a break, unnie,' I replied, which was really true. She eyed me like there was something more, and since I cannot keep a secret from her, moreso with all my Cinderellas, I decided to tell her everything that happened.
'There was someone who surfaced quite a few weeks ago, someone from my past. Wanting to give an end to everything that happened, if there ever was, I agreed to talk. Now Bin got the wrong idea and we had our first fight. Or so it seemed. A few days after he went cold, I had my pride then I opted to get out of the kitchen because it was really hot,' I began, recalling the most hurtful moment I had ever encountered in my married life. Unnie gestured for me to go on until we heard an announcement.
'Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We are sorry for the turbulence we are all experiencing right now, but rest assured that we are alright. We are flying 38,000 feet and we are on our way to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. We are safe, so please sit back and relax. Thank you.'
Amsterdam? I tried to think about the flight that I booked and it was very clear that I had a direct flight to Athens.
'Unnie, is there something wrong?' I asked. She was silent for a moment, and I could feel that she was thinking of a lot of things.
'Wait is our flight having a layover in Amsterdam?' she asked.
'No, we were supposed to fly direct,' I replied. I tried to relax, breathe easy, prayed for a safe land at least and thought of happy thoughts. I presume unnie also did the same thing, and a few minutes later, I felt my eyelids become heavier as sleep crept up in my system.
When I woke up, another announcement came through and we were informed that we were a few minutes away from the airport. A flight attendant who came to our seat told us that we needed to have an emergency landing since we were out of radar and the signal just came through when we heard that announcement earlier. The pilot was asked to make a safe emergency landing at the nearest airport. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes once more, thinking what could have happened. My mind then traveled to my family who were left behind and if Bin already knew of this news.
