"You're not serious, are you?"
Elodie paced around the room, trying to digest all the information. She couldn't believe what she was hearing.
"How did she survive? And how did no one find out about this?" - Elodie began to get angry.
"Well, only those who were on her side, those she trusted, knew about it. Besides, she could easily get rid of those she no longer needed or who betrayed her" - Ezra said calmly. He had already more or less put his thoughts in order.
"Do you think she has many accomplices here, in Nevermoor?"
"I don't know, but I am sure that those who help her are very powerful people who have enough power in their hands" - he frowned at these words and pursed his lips. It didn't bode well.
"We need to warn the others. We must be prepared" - Elodie looked Ezra firmly in the eye - "I'm afraid we'll have to fight".
"I'll go to Owain tomorrow and tell him everything. I'll try to contact the others as well" - Ezra got up from the sofa and walked over to Elodie - "Please talk to Mathilde. You see a lot of her" - he gave her a little hug - "We need to be careful... Especially you".
"Why me in particular? There's something you're not telling me, Ezra" - she looked at him reproachfully.
Ezra sighed. He could never hide anything from her. Sometimes it was annoying.
"As I told you, she wanted me to help her with the plan, but I refused. And then ..." - he turned away and continued - "And then she threatened to kill you and the other Wundersmiths if I dared to stop her. But I can't leave it at that". His shoulders slumped.
Elodie could see that he didn't know what to do, and she understood perfectly.
She went to him and put her arms around him, turning him to face her so that she could look into his eyes.
"I know. We have to stop her before she harms anyone. Don't worry, we'll be fine. You made the right choice. Don't even dare to doubt it" - a small smile appeared on her lips.
Ezra smiled back, feeling a little relieved at Elodie's words, and then leaned over and kissed her on the lips.
"I don't want to lose you" - he whispered, pulling away.
Elodie stroked his cheek and leaned against his chest. He hugged her tightly.
"Don't think bad thoughts. It's going to be all right, honey" - Elodie said.
Ezra couldn't see that her face twitched a little at that. But she tried to pull herself together. This was not the time to show weakness.

The next day Ezra and Elodie couldn't find Owain or Matilda. The rest of the Wundersmiths also seemed to have disappeared. Elodie was beginning to worry and she wasn't so sure about her and Ezra's plan. A feeling of anxiety haunted her. Ezra didn't miss it. He could easily read Elodie's mood. So he encouraged her as much as he could. When three days passed and their friends didn't show up, Ezra and Elodie decided to act on their own. Even if it meant that it was a practical suicidal act. But they couldn't wait any longer.
"Something definitely happened to them. And I'm sure it was not without that Goldberry" - Elodie said, walking with her fists clenched and looking straight ahead.
Ezra took her hand and she had to unclench her fists. He smiled at her out of the corner of his mouth and Elodie wondered again how he could remain calm in such a situation.
Ezra had long ago learned to hide his true emotions when it was necessary. In front of Elodie he tried not to do this, he wanted to be honest with her. But he had to do it now. He could see Elodie's fear and he didn't want her to worry any more, even though he was just as scared as she was. So he tried to calm down and cheer Elodie up.
As he walked through the main square, Ezra saw something glint out of the corner of his eye. He managed to put up a barrier in time, otherwise the fireball would have hit them directly.
"What the hell?" - Ezra's eyes flashed angrily. But then his face changed as he saw a man who had attacked them. It was Owain. But there was something wrong with him. As if it was him, but at the same time it wasn't.
"What are you doing?" - Elodie came forward.
"Did you really think you could get away with this?" - said Owain. His voice filled with rage and contempt.
The other Wundersmiths appeared behind him.
"Could you be more specific? We have no idea what you're talking about. And in general, we also have questions for you. For example, where have you been?" - Ezra also began to lose his temper.
"It was very stupid of you to get involved with the Republic" - Mathilde said now.
Ezra and Elodie couldn't believe their ears. Did they really think Ezra had betrayed them? It was absurd.
"I don't know what you're thinking, but Ezra isn't a betrayer".
"You don't want to see what's happening right in front of your face, Elodie. You've always been too naive and trusting".
"The only thing I can see right now is that you attacked us and accused us unfairly".
"Calm down, Elodie" - Ezra said, putting a hand on her shoulder - "There's something wrong with them".
