"That poor girl, she never smiles. Not once have I seen the slightest grin upon that face. I wonder what in the world could have happened to her." Says an old lady to her husband as a small child with long, stringy, mouse brown hair and big, sad blue eyes walked passed.
The girl of course heard them talking. She heard everything, she saw everything. She was an old soul. She wasn't particularly sad, at least not anymore.
Her parents and older brother had died when she was only four years old. Young enough to not fully understand what was going on, but old enough to remember.
She travels around the city, she doesn't have a real home. But she was never in fact homeless. The walls of the city and the friendly gardens of the warmest people in town were her home. Everyone knew her. To them, she was like the neighborhood cat that everyone sees and takes care of, yet no one knows where they belong.
The little girl was content with her life, she either had all the necessities or she found a way to get them, but she never smiled. If she never smiled, then any hardship that came her way wouldn't seem as bad. Nobody could see her break when the smile suddenly faltered and fell from her face. No one could see how weak she had come to be.
