Chapter Nineteen: The Forum [Part II]

Hanji raised an eyebrow as they crossed their arms over their chest, asking with a tone that I could only describe as that of indifference, "Eren? Isn't he your old flame? But more than that, what could he be possibly doing here?"

I tore my gaze off of Eren's figure and met Hanji's eyes, my worry evident on my face as I responded, "Yeah, he's the one I mentioned to you before. As for why he's here, I have no idea. His mere presence here means that he's somehow connected to the agency," I paused before adding in almost a whisper, "I'm glad I broke it off with him."

Hanji turned their head slightly to get a glimpse of the aforementioned male, scoffing slightly before saying, "In any case, he can't see that you're here, otherwise, it might get even more complicated than it already is."

"Why's that, Hanji?" I asked tentatively as I turned to face the other way, "He doesn't know that we're on an undercover assignment anyway, and we could simply be looking to adopt a child without any hidden motive."

Is Hanji jealous?

They were silent for a few moments, prompting me to turn once more and face them, only to find their face partially hidden by their hand, while the tips of their ears were a bit red. I couldn't help but chuckle lightly, realizing what just happened - there was a chance that my guess was right, but of course, I wouldn't ask them that.

We were in enemy territory, after all, and this was no time to be thinking about such things.

"You have a point," Hanji finally said a few seconds after clearing their throat, "This could be an opportunity to learn about his involvement with the agency, and who knows? He might end up leading us to someone vital to this operation."

I nodded in agreement as I bit my lip in nervousness, partly because of the ongoing assignment and partly because I'll have to face Eren once more. But there was no room for hesitation - I did agree to do my best as Hanji's wife, and I should've known that something unexpected would happen, such as this.

Besides, I had Hanji by my side, so there's nothing I should be afraid of.

I lightly grabbed on to Hanji's arm, giving them a determined look as I said without hesitation, "Then, let's go and bump into Eren, and hopefully get some information out of him."

With their free hand, Hanji tenderly brushed their fingers against my cheek, leaning in slightly to say with a soft smile on their lips, "That's my girl."

I gave them a genuine smile as I felt my cheeks heat up, placing my hand on their proffered arm as they escorted me out of the balcony and into the hall. The event was lively by the time we came back, with a jazz band playing on the stage while the guests danced along with the tune in the middle, turning it into a dance floor.

My eyes scanned the hall for any signs of Eren, eventually spotting him talking with the male from a while ago, near one of the grand doors that seemed to lead into a hallway. Hanji and I both discreetly observed him as we walked around the floor leisurely, until we saw him slip out the door.

I glanced up at Hanji and met their gaze, and they gave me a curt nod before we made our way into the door he exited through. Of course, we made sure that no one had spotted us before we made our move.

We softly closed the door behind us and found ourselves in a hallway that extended in both directions, and Hanji whispered as they briefly searched left and right, "I don't see him anywhere, he sure moves rather quickly."

Holding on to them a bit tightly, I asked in suggestion, "Do you think we should split up? Then just use our phones in case one of us sees him."

"Not a chance, darling. I'm not letting you out of my sight even for a single second" they answered without a moment's hesitation, and I could only nod as I said with a soft chuckle, "I understand, that makes sense. But, how do we know which way he went?"
