bell and mark were sat on the beach, towel between them and the sand. their pinkies were linked together, and they were watching the gentle waves roll over the shore line.
after a moment, mark grabbed the girls hand fully, and turned to face her.
"bell," he whispered, his hand latched to hers. "i'm in love with you."
bell looked up into his grey eyes, filled with honesty and kindness, and she smiled.
"i'm in love with you, too."
the boy smiled, and his eyes flickered down to her lips. as he leaned closer, bell felt her eyes flutter shut. they were centimeters away, and then—
bell's eyes snapped open. her alarm was blaring next to her face, and a cold sweat was pressed to her forehead, matting her hair down. she grasped at her shirt, pulling on it to try and get some sort of air flow. with one hand, she pushed some of the sweaty hair from her forehead and took a few deep breaths.
the air around her was sticky. heavy, almost. it was like the air conditioner had completely turned off. still taking deep breaths, bell wandered over to her dresser and threw on a different t-shirt. the cool fabric pressed against her hot skin, and she sighed in relief.
as she sat back down on her bed, the dream played over and over again in her mind. she fanned herself through the stagnant air, trying to figure out why she would have a dream like that. a knock on her door snapped her out of her thoughts.
"bell? honey, i know you heard your alarm. get dressed for school, please." her father called from the other side.
when his footsteps receded, she stood. she quickly walked back to her dresser, for the second time that day, and grabbed a pair of jeans and a shirt she had thrifted a few years ago.
