Chapter7-The Lesbian Test

“First question, have you ever been attracted to someone of the same sex?”

“No.” I answered, right off the bat.

She looked up at me but didn't say anything. She held up a finger on her left hand and kept reading. “Have you ever thought of having a relationship with someone of the same sex?”

I just stared at her, not sure what the answer really was. Did I do that and not know it? Like, unconsciously?

She smiled just a little and lifted a finger on her right hand. “When being involved with someone sexually, do you ever imagine the person is someone else? Or someone of the same gender?”

I laughed. “Not at all.”

She held up another finger on her left hand. “Have you ever found a friend or best friend, of the same gender, attractive or thought of them in such a way?”

“You're making this up.” I said, reaching for the paper.

She handed it over. “I am not.”

Sure enough, the questions she was asking were on the paper. She had circled a few of the answers as a yes with very little no's. Obviously, she'd have wanted to know if she was gay or not.

“Answer the question.” She said.

“I don't know. Maybe.” Yeah, I found girls attractive and thought of them as being pretty. But didn't everyone? It was normal... right?

She put up another finger on her right hand. “One more then I'll give you your results.”

“But there are more questions on the paper.”

“I made up my own test from this one. Some of these questions are kinda dumb.”

“Then how come this worked for you?”

She shrugged. “I guess I just knew. Come on. One more.”

“Fine.”

“Have you ever done anything with a girl? Sexually or otherwise?”

“I've only ever been with my boyfriend, Ava. And I don't cheat.”

“Ever?”

I shook my head. “I have no reason to. I love my boyfriend.”

“I never would've expected that from you.”

“Really? Why?”

She shrugged and put the paper back on the desk. “You seem like the type to party a lot and I figure there's a lot of... kissing and stuff going on.”

“I'm usually out for most of the party. You know, drugs and all. And Jason always takes me home once he's done selling everything.”

“The last party I went to was for my cousin who's four. The most exciting thing there was the pinata.”

I laughed. “That's kind of sad. You should find some parties and I'll show you a good time.”

“No drugs. Or alcohol.”

“Come on, Ava. Live a little.”

She narrowed her eyes at me. “I am plenty fun without that stuff. And I bet you are, too.”

“Maybe, maybe not. I never stay sober enough to notice.”

“You know, my mom died from drugs.”

I stared down at my hands, not knowing what to say. Death wasn't something I was familiar with. “I-I'm sorry.”

“Her mom had been a smoker for most of her life and my mom was around it a lot. She got lung cancer from it, the doctor said. Second-hand smoke? She passed away not long ago.”
