Chapter5-Chocolate Milkshakes
The restaurant she took me to was actually a diner, something I didn't exactly expect to see. But things in the mountains were different than the city and I shouldn't seen this coming even before I left home.
She pulled into a spot close to the door and jumped out, literally. It was a wonder she could even get in the truck for starters. She was about five feet exactly whereas I was a little over five four.
We walked into the diner and hardly anyone was in there. The waitress, a tall blonde woman, waved at us. “Hello, Ava. The usual?”
Ava pursed her lips. “Sure. But I think she's gonna need a menu.” She jabbed her thumb in my direction. Ava headed towards a booth, the seat cover a bright red, and sat down, crossing her legs under her.
I sat down across from her and, unconsciously, crossed one leg over the other at the knee. It was a girly move, one I wouldn't admit to doing if someone asked me.
“They have the best shakes here.” Ava said, pulling her long hair back into a ponytail. She had to use two holders before her hair stayed up the right way.
“I take it you come here a lot.” I pointed out.
She laughed. “My dad's the cook in the back. I get a discount every time I come.”
“That must be nice.”
“Oh, totally.”
The waitress came over and set a menu in front of me. “Can I get you anything to drink?”
I looked over at Ava for a second before ordering a chocolate milkshake.
“Oh my gosh.” Ava said when the waitress walked away, practically drooling. “Chocolate is my favorite.”
I laughed, and it actually surprised me that this time it was me instead of her.
The menu had all sorts of items: breakfast sandwiches, dinner meals, burgers and fries for lunch. There was even a burger with an egg on it.
“What are you getting?” I asked, looking up from the menu.
“A salad.”
I rolled my eyes. “You're kidding. You'll eat a milkshake but-”
“You don't eat a milkshake. You drink it.”
I almost glared at her but the smile growing on her face was too much. I laughed just when the waitress came back to the table with our milkshakes.
“Decided what you want to eat?” She asked, her notepad and pen ready.
“The cheeseburger with fries.”
“Easy enough. I'll have your dad get right on it.” The waitress put her pen behind her ear and walked back to the back of the diner. When she opened the door to the kitchen, music came out, dying off as the door swayed shut.
Ava grabbed the straw between her thumb and index finger and leaned towards the table to take a sip of her milkshake. “Good, right?”
I took a sip of mine. It was really well blended together and the chocolate taste was very prominent. “Really good.”
“I'll be sure to tell my dad that.”
I sipped at my milkshake in silence, not sure what to say to her.
“So, what do you like to do? Like hobbies and such.” She asked, her arms rested on the table.
There were a number of things I could tell her, like the countless times I snuck out to smoke or snort something with Jason. But I knew she wouldn't be in to that sort of thing, I just had a feeling, so I had to find something else to say. “I draw a lot. Just nature stuff mostly. Um... I like to read.”
