Marinette sat behind her desk, in her oh so pink room. There still laid some pieces of cut red fabric on the ground, just like her desk was covered with books and papers from school.
'Oh come on Marinette, you have to go. It will be fun and we need to have you there,' Alya said, through the phone. It was easy for her, but Marinette wouldn't get into that just yet.
'I would love to go, if I didn't still have tons of homework to do. Not to forget that the only dress I could wear isn't even finished yet and won't be this evening if I also want to be done with history,' Marinette answered, looking at the mess that had become her room. She really had become a mess and she couldn't always start blaming her secret identity for it.
'Oh Mari! You should have said that earlier! Then I would already be by you with some of my dresses you could have borrowed.'
'Alya, stop,' Marinette told her. 'I won't go. I'm way too busy to go. I will only get myself in trouble and...' quick Marinette quick, think of yet an other lie you could tell your best friend. 'And I need to help my parents in the bakery. I promised my mother I would help her with the bread.'
'But what if-,' Alya got cut off.
'No, Adrien won't be there. His father would never allow him to go and you know it Alya. I don't want to be a burden to you and Nino, you two should just have some fun together without me hanging around all the time. I love you two but honestly being a third wheel of you is the most annoying thing ever.'
Marinette could hear Alya sight from the other side of the phone.
'You sure girl?' her friend asked.
'Hmh, I really am. Don't worry about me,' Marinette answered. "I'll be fine.'
'Okay then. See you Monday at school then.'
'See ya, and have fun!' she answered before hanging up the phone.
She let herself slide down on her chair. It was going to be a long night, even if Hawk Moth decided to be nice for once and there wouldn't appear an akuma. She would be lying yet again if she said she never questioned giving this all up so she could finally live a normal life. But that meant she would also need to give up spending time with Cat Noir, and Paris would still be in danger. So every time she convinced herself again and again this was the best and she would be able to pull through. She was Ladybug after all, she had been through worse.
Her eyes shifted to the red dress that sat on her mannequin. It had a black top, with one see through puffy sleeve. The skirt was deep red, with a split on the right and black dots on it. Ever wearing the dress could be tricky, but then again she could always tell yet an other lie that she was such a big fan of ladybug.
Marinette rubbed her eyes when Tikki appeared from behind her. A small smile appeared on the girls face before she took her kwami in her hands.
'Are you sure you're not going, Marinette?' TIkki asked.
'What if Hawk Moth attacks, or people will recognize me? It's a masked ball Tikki. I know the magic helps but still. Besides, I have no one to go with.'
'I think that might change, Marinette. Think about the people when they might recognize you. They would love to know Ladybug came to their ball, don't you think?'
Marinette thought about that for a moment. 'You know Tikki, you're right. There might also be enough people dressed up as me so I won't stand out. If they find out I will just say I heard it via via.'
'A brilliant idea, Marinette. Won't you tell Alya you're going?'
'I just told her I have to help my parents in the bakery. Then she will definitely know I lied and I can't have that.' She looked at the time. 'Well Tikki, we have officially one hour before the ball starts. Should be enough to fix up the last details on the dress and make a mask. It might actually be good to go out again. A little different from going out to free yet another akumatized citizen.'
'Oh, oh, could you make a little pocked in your dress? Then you can just dance and still keep
your phone and me close, for when an attack might happen,' Tikki suggested.
'You're a genius Tikki,' Marintte responded before she got to work.
She started with sewing up the last black dots on the skirt, that got followed by making sure the sleeve was attached well. When she was finished with that she only had to make the mask and get into it all.
The mask definitely was a tricky task, but there was nothing the hands of Marinette Dupain-Cheng couldn't make, so after a while her red mask with five black spots was finished too. She got into the dress, and looked in the mirror. Marinette had to admit, she liked the way she looked. After her hair was brushed and put in a single ponytail with a red ribbon around it, she was basically ready.
Marinette looked at her phone once again.
'No, no, no! I'll be late again!' she exclaimed.
'Oh Marinette, don't hesitate, go,' Tikki responded with her calm tone as usual.
She almost wanted to leave her room, though luckily remembered she had almost forgotten her mask. Now with her mask on and TIkki and her phone in her pocket she was ready to go.
After giving her parents a kiss she left into the night, ready to hopefully have a night off to have some fun.
