//Hi! I'm actually back from my break! It lasted much longer than I thought it would. Basically, (even though you guys might not care) I basically had to speedrun finishing my school work for the last two weeks of school. I am now out of school so I don't have to finish that! So, this fic is based off the song "I Hear a Symphony" by Cody Fry. If you want to listen to it while reading, I've linked it above. You don't have to, of course.

Plot: In this world, when you look at someone you love you hear a song in your head. The more you fall for them, the more complex the song gets. If you two find out you're soulmates, it will automatically grow. When you fall out of love, you're song will go silent. If you're soulmate dies then you will be unable to hear a song for the rest of your life.

Boyfriend stared at the face of his best friend, Pico, his mind filled with a sweet song. Pico wasn't paying attention to him, instead playing a video game. He watched Pico's facial expression closely, taking in every time his nose twitched, every time he eyes darted to a different part of the screen. Every little eyebrow furrow. He watched it, every time, the song in his head slowly growing in instruments and volume.

"You know, I used to hear a super simple song," The male spoke, making Pico look over to him for a brief second, just to show he was listening. A second layer of piano began to play. "That was, until you came along." Pico chuckled, shaking his head gently.

"Bro, you know I'm playing Dark Souls right now. I gotta focus," Pico stated in a soft voice. Boyfriend only heard that voice when the two were alone.

"Now, instead of that I hear something brand new. I hear it whenever I look at you," Boyfriend spoke, his head tilting slightly. He could see Pico's face better, the song slightly increased in volume.

"Yeah, yeah. I know you're just joking. You know you only hear a different song when you're looking at someone you love," Pico stated in a joking tone. When Boyfriend was silent, Pico looked at him. "Right, bro?"

Time passed, and the term best friend turned into boyfriend.

By now, the music was beautiful. But, the songs were simple. Too simple. Boyfriend knew that if you discovered the person was your soulmate, the songs would grow into something so much more. He wanted that, he wanted more. Arguments started. Boyfriend wanted to find out if they were soulmates, Pico was too scared that they weren't.

"I'm done with these stupid simple songs! I want more!" Boyfriend yelled. Tears lined Pico's eyes. When Boyfriend saw the tears, he realized he was pushing too hard. He backed down and so did the arguments. Peace was among the duo only for a short time.

Pico constantly worried he wasn't enough, that he wanted perfection. One night, Pico shattered, sobbing into him.

"Sweetheart, let me tell you something. Perfection is too quick to bore. I don't want perfection. You are more beautiful than perfection, by far. Our flaws make us who we are. They make you who you are. And you are beautiful."

The two's music got just a little louder that day.

More time passed. Weeks, months, years. Eventually, they did go to see if they were soulmates. And when they got told yes, Boyfriend's music exploded into something beautiful the moment he made eye contact with Pico. It wasn't long that the title boyfriend turned into fiance.

On their wedding day, Boyfriend was the first to give his vowels. While the people in the audience didn't understand why the line was so deep, the two did. It was the same line he used when he confessed his love.

"I used to hear a simple song. That was until you came along. You took my simple melody and now... I hear a symphony!" The crowd erupted into applause when the two kissed after his, now, husband gave his vowels.

More time passed, they adopted kids. They got a home, animals, good paying jobs. It all seemed to fly by in such a short span of time. Until time seemed to stop for the pair.

"I'm sorry to say this... but you've been diagnosed with dementia. I'm so sorry." One line from the doctor was all it took. The painful screams of his husband's despair filled his ears once the news settled in. He'd forget everything. The past, the kids, his husband.

They coped, attempting to elongate the time they had together. It didn't work. One day, Boyfriend woke up in a house unfamiliar to him. At least, he thought it was a house. It was a room, at least. He woke up in a bed next to a stranger. Who was that? His head was filled with silence. He didn't know why this saddened him. He decided to get up, look around the unfamiliar area. Getting out of bed awoken the person next to him, though.

"Good morning, babydoll," The stranger said in a low voice.

"Why are you calling me babydoll? And who even are you. Where am I?"

At one time, they ended up in a hospital. This hospital trip would change everything.

"It's time," Boyfriend said to his husband, his head playing a symphony. He missed the sweet sounds.

"Time? What? Time for what?" Pico responded, confused.

"Time for me to go, my love," Boyfriend said. Pico's eyes were lined with tears.

"Y-You... That's... You're back, babydoll. Wait... NO! YOU CAN'T LEAVE! NOT WHEN YOU'RE GETTING BACK!" Pico screamed. The scream hurt Boyfriend, but he was glad he could see his husband before he went. He saw his brother, his dad, and his good friend all waving, waiting with open arms.

"I used to hear a simple song," He said, cupping his husband's face, wiping his tears. "That was until you came along. And now, I hear a symphony," He said, using the last of his strength to gently wipe the tears before his eyes felt heavy, so did he body. It was time.

Pico could no longer hear a song, and he never would again.
