You were strewn across your bed in a deep state of blissful sleep, your legs were tangled in the blankets of your bed. The red LEDs that were strung across your dorm and bedroom illuminated your peaceful face and messy hair that draped over the plush pillows. It was the middle of the night where everything was seemingly ordinary as per usual. But something told you that was not the case. Your body may have been asleep but your brain was conscious and alert. Sighing out of frustration you snapped your eyes open and pushed yourself upright your back relaxing on the headboard of your bed. You lifted your hands to run them through your messy and tangled (h/c) locks. You faintly heard what sounded footsteps outside of your dorm room. Your heart started to race
They were heavy footsteps and you could tell they didn't belong to anyone you knew. You quickly got up and out of your bed. You pulled on your oversized white hoodie that you had bought not too long ago. It's soft interior felt nice against your bare arms.
Your sleepwear simply consisted of an oversized T-shirt and some athletic shorts. You crept over to the main door to your dorm and got on your toes to look through the peephole. Your eyes landed on a middle aged man in a police uniform. You ran back to grab your phone and keychain with keys before opening the door to try and find out what a police officer was doing here.
Your door creaked slightly as you opened it. The middle aged cop turned to face you.
You stepped out of your dorm room. You locked it behind you before putting your keychain and phone into the large center pocket of your hoodie.
You then looked the man in the eyes a mixture of confusion and concern graced your facial features.
The man turned to face you fully before speaking.
"Miss, do you happen to know a-" he glanced down at the clipboard he was holding. You hadn't noticed it until now.
The police officer returned his gaze back to you before continuing. "Do you happen to know an Arianna Sinclair?" You could almost feel your pupils widen in fear. "Yeah, we're friends, why" the police officer exhaled a sigh through his nose.
"She was in a tragic car accident earlier tonight-" your mind was racing now, so many thoughts flooded your mind at once.
"She didn't make it, I'm sorry"
Everything stopped.
Your thoughts.
Your breathing.
It even seemed like your heart stopped in that very moment.
Your hands dropped to your sides.
You seemed frozen, the only thing that brought you back to reality was the police officer in front of you.
"Miss? Miss are you alright?"
You finally inhaled again.
Arianna had told you her whole life story just yesterday.
You two were shopping in a mall just a couple hours ago.
She couldn't have died, could she?
You exhaled
Arianna Sinclair had suffered the same fate as her parents.
It seemed like the universe was playing a cruel joke on you and you had no idea how to respond.
"Miss, you said you were a friend of dear Arianna Sinclair correct-" "where?" That was the only word you could manage to say.
"Miss-"
"WHERE!?" You screamed at the police officer in pure shock. Tears were running down your face.
"I'm afraid I can't tell you-"
You turned on your heel and ran through the seemingly endless hallways.
You pulled out your phone only to see the dreadful notification
'you have 1 message from "Arianna" '
You clicked the notification and it opened the chat you had with her.
Your feet stopped moving as soon as you had pulled out your phone.
Arianna: I'm so sorry tell Jeff I love him
You screamed in pure emotional agony and continued running. You ran and practically flew over the stairs on your way down. As soon as you pushed through the finial door to exit your dormitory.
You saw flashing lights in the distance and heard the sirens of police and ambulance vehicles.
You ran to them.
Everything was a blur. The flashing lights and the ringing were the only things your mind could comprehend.
Your legs were moving on their own. They hurt at this point but you don't care. You had to keep running. You could feel the stinging of the concrete pavement as your feet slapped against it as you continued running.
You were close now, close enough to make out the figures of people
Of bystanders that lived in the houses surrounding the accident.
Of the police officers investigating the accident and interrogating people.
The familiar silhouette of Jeff. Your feet ran directly to him.
As soon as you ran into his chest your arms latched around his torso and his arms did the same to you.
Your head let you completely break down now.
You sobbed into the fitted black T-shirt he was wearing.
Your hands desperately gripped to his shirt for comfort.
the sirens of the cars still ringing in your ears as you tried to focus on Jeff rather than the chaos around you.
you heard him sob from above you.
this broke your heart. sure you we're slightly afraid of him. sure hes done many things that almost gave you that right.
but he loved Arianna and now she was gone.
seeing him cry right in front of you, clinging onto you as if you were the last bit of reality he had left reminded you that he too, was human.
soon enough both of your legs gave out from under you, Jeff followed quickly.
you were now embracing eachother in a sitting position.
you shifted uncomfortably through your sobs.
Jeff noticed this and removed his arms from your torso. he then found a way to weasel his arms around you and pull you into his lap. you payed it no mind as you limply laid there as he moved his arms around you once more holding you tightly to his chest. you felt comfortable in his cage-like embrace.
soon enough you regained yourself enough to the point where you could speak.
"she really loved you Jeff-" your voice cracked a couple times in the one sentence you managed to speak.
you knew saying it would hurt him but it had to be said.
you couldnt even bare to look at him.
the lights were so blinding. the sirens so loud. you felt Jeff's ragged breaths in his chest. you heard his uneven heartbeat.
soon Jeff lifted you once more, but this time to face him. you went limp in this touch.
you avoided eye contact. but he lifted your head to look at him.
nothing was said, but his eyes, now irritated and red from crying welcomed you back into his embrace. he knew you were hurt and felt the need to comfort you, or was it the need to protect you?
you once again leaned into his chest, curling up in his embrace.
