The moment when I started to give up on keeping myself alive, someone else took on the responsibility.
A silhouette jumped into the Dragon's leftovers and started to swim closer and closer to my drowning figure.
I couldn't make out who my saviour was at that moment, but I could feel their strong arms wrapping around me gently before doing their best to swim us back into the surface.
Once we broke out of the fluid, I let out a gasp as I began to breathe in the air before violently coughing out the water that got stuck inside my lungs.
My rescuer said nothing; they only focused on bringing us out of the disgusting fluid.
Finally, they carefully pulled me out before joining me and pulling themselves out.
They supported me as we walked towards the wall and I let out a sigh of relief before sitting down and leaning my back against it.
I took this as a chance to finally take a proper look at the one who saved me.
His blue hair glistened with droplets of liquid under the dim light as he crouched down in front of me before putting a comforting hand on my shoulder.
I stared into his matching blue eyes that shone with worry.
"Ayato...?" I managed to utter.
"Yeah," he said with a small smile, "It's me."
I took a few deep breaths to control my breathing.
Once I calmed down, I put a hand on top of his.
"Thank you," I said with a smile, "I think I'm fine now. Let's go find Kaneki."
Ayato furrowed his eyebrows.
"Are you sure?"
I nodded.
He stood up before helping me get up on my two feet.
Then, the two of us took off to try and find Kaneki.
Ayato ran a few paces in front of me as I tried to keep up.
Out of all the times that I've spent with Ayato, I've never seen him this worried.
The way he looked at me after almost losing me made my heart did a little flip.
Does he care about me that much...?
Suddenly, a familiar scent filled our nostrils.
The two of us stopped as we took in the scent.
"Y/N, do you smell that?" Ayato asked.
I nodded.
"Ken's nearby."
Ayato turned towards me.
"I'll go find him," he said, "Can you help me pull him up once I do?"
"Of course," I replied, "Be careful."
Ayato nodded before jumping back into the fluid.
I stood near the edge, but not too close for me to suddenly trip and fall in.
I nervously looked at the Dragon's leftovers while silently praying for them to be okay.
Just in time, Ayato resurfaced with my best friend in his hands.
"Ken!" I called out.
Ayato swam towards me as fast as he could.
Once he was in front of me, I pulled Kaneki out as he followed suit.
